Why the Proposed 'Unlicensed Auction' Is Such a Phenomonally Bad Idea -- The Economics

Full article: Public Knowledge
Harold Feld
To call the discussion draft on spectrum reform circulated by House Commerce Commitee Republicans 'flawed' understates the matter almost to the point of absurdity. We have reached the point where we will explicitly auction off to "industry" the right to do their own rulemaking. And to make matters worse, the proposal is fundamentally flawed from an economic standpoint.

Everybody Get Your DUNS! And Why Grants.Gov Needs an Extreme Makeover

Full article: Wet Machine
harold Feld
Grants.gov needs an extreme makover -- quickly. The idea that I need to get a number so I can register for another number to go into a database that will be redundant with other databases is rather ridiculous in this day and age. worse, it creates a serious barrier to every single desired outcome.

Understanding What the Broadband Stimulus Does, and What It Doesn't Try to Do

Full article: Wet Machine
Harold Feld
The stimulus bill is designed with two goals. One is to pump money into the economy to get past a "freeze" in the flow of capital and the creation of wealth. This is the piece most folks focus on. But the other goal is actually about transforming the fundamentals of the economy so that job creation and economic growth remain sustainable. This goal is more important.

White Spaces Wrap Up: Exclusive Licensing, or the Part 101 Poison Pill

Full article: Wet Machine
Harold Feld
Exclusive licensing for white spaces is a poison pill that will kill open, unlicensed use for the unused TV spectrum. Yes, getting rural backhaul and more spectrum for competing wireless carriers is important. But the effort to do so by licensing white space sacrifices too much.
