For Tomorrow's Cellphones, It's About Speed

When Apple's second-generation iPhone hits the market later this year, it is expected to take advantage of a faster phone network known as "3-G," which will make DSL-style speeds available to cellphone users. Other mobile devices are also upgrading to these faster networks, and increasingly taking advantage of Wi-Fi connections. How will these faster networks change the way we use cellphones?

Australia Requests Bids for $8.8 Billion Broadband Network

The Australian government has called for bids for a A$9.4 billion ($8.8 billion) high-speed broadband network that will help the country catch up in competitiveness with its peers. Australia has slower and more expensive Internet access than many other developed countries and officials have warned Australia may become less competitive without faster, nationwide coverage.

A new nonprofit group will invest millions in supporting community-based "universal access" to the Internet and digital services. The Knight Center of Digital Excellence, announced this week, says it will start by investing $625,000 toward a new wireless network designed to blanket up to 12 square miles of Akron, Ohio.
CBS Layoffs Signal a Financial Squeeze on TV Stations

When veteran Los Angeles news anchors Harold Greene and Ann Martin were felled by a round of jobs cuts last week, they were in good company. At least 160 employees at CBS Corp.-owned television stations in 13 cities were let go, including such seasoned broadcasters as prominent Chicago anchor Diann Burns, renowned Boston sportscaster Bob Lobel and longtime Minneapolis meteorologist Paul Douglas.

After the Election, What of Cable News?

The 2008 presidential campaign season has been a long and heady one for the cable news networks, which have telecast and heavily promoted 23 primary debates and used plot-changing primary nights to generate double-digit ratings increases.

But the history of cable news viewership is a roller coaster of steep highs, reflecting major news stories, followed by deep drops.

In Nightly News, Little That's Really New

Network evening news has seemingly gone through tremendous changes in the past several years, beginning with a complete turnover in anchors.

If anything, it's a more contentious race, with the three networks, CBS, NBC and ABC, competing for viewers not only with each other but with the all-news cable networks and increasingly the internet.
