China's 'Green Dam' Overflows and Bursts

Full article: Huffington Post
Leslie Harris
Chinese Internet users won an important victory when the Chinese government indefinitely delayed implementation of the widely condemned "Green Dam" filtering mandate. Although this isn't the first time the government has retreated from an unreasonable Internet-related mandate, it is the first time that there has been such a transparent, coordinated and vocal effort both in and out of the country to halt the order.

YouTube Takedowns Offer a Chilling Look at What a Filtered Web Could Look Like

Full article: Public Knowledge
Mehan Jayasuriya
In a Web-driven economy, there are fewer commodities more valuable than user-generated content. But there's a cadre of extremely powerful companies that can disrupt the flow of user-general content at will. Their heavy-handed approach could define the very nature of the Web -- and the long-term viability of the Internet economy may lie in the balance.

Kenneth Corbin
Net Neutrality advocates scored some recent victories with language in the broadband stimulus package, giving their efforts fresh momentum. But their ideal may be facing an even tougher opponent -- content filtering -- when Congress takes up the issue again.

Australia's Internet Filtering Too Ambitious, Doomed to Fail

Full article: ars technica
Iljitsch van Beijnum
Rather than actually doing something about illegal content, the Australian government is running a pilot program that simply makes a list of it and tells ISPs to filter everything that's on the list. This approach is politically murky and fraught with civil liberties problems. And besides, it won't work.

Karl Bode
A coalition of most major ISPs, researchers and Pando networks, is working on a more efficient protocol that can significantly speed up P2P transfers. But a number of questions remain unanswered concerning filtering and ISP gatekeeping.

Iljitsch van Beijnum
Belgian Internet Service Provider Scarlet won a small victory in the ongoing legal battle between the ISP and Belgian copyright holders representative SABAM.
