Everything the Media Told You About Occupy Wall Street Is Wrong

Keith Boykin
After being out of town, I finally made it to Occupy Wall Street this week and had a chance to see for myself what's going on. My conclusion: almost everything the media told me about the protest is wrong.

Media Minutes: October 7, 2011

After three weeks of the Occupy Wall Street protests, the establishment media are beginning to pick up the story. But increased airtime doesn’t necessarily equal quality reporting. And a new paper says that Net Neutrality generates economic benefits for consumers — as much as $5,600 per user, per year.

Gloria Goodale
Hurricane Irene never reached above a Category 3 hurricane as it moved up the Eastern seaboard. But media coverage of the storm easily reached Category 5 proportions.

Thomas A. Reed
With every catastrophe around the globe, need exceeds resources, and people struggle to survive by any means necessary. So why should Haitians be judged any differently?

The Media's Role in Demonizing Muslim Men and Women

Full article: StopBigMedia.com
Asma Uddin
With the media constantly spewing out images of oppressed Muslim women and angry Muslim men, the world looks on with both fascination and disgust. The Muslim gender dynamic -- supposedly a singular, unchanging construct -- has become a spectacle for everyone to gawk at, to comment on, and ultimately, to use to ridicule the larger Muslim community.

Swine Flu Coverage: Panic or Proper?

Full article: Editor & Publisher
Joe Strupp
The growing swine flu scare is a Page One story in nearly every newspaper. Jon Stewart calls it "Snoutbreak 2009." But is the coverage overplaying the danger or providing proper levels of information? Health journalism veterans and experts warn that too much negative coverage can stir panic.

Remember That Excuse for Not Showing Coffins Coming Home from War? Turns Out Families OK with It

Since the Pentagon ended a ban on media coverage of fallen soldiers returning, most families have allowed journalists to witness the solemn ceremonies that mark the arrival of flag-draped transfer cases. Critics had warned that military families needed privacy but so far the coverage has not caused problems.

Evening Newscasts Have Covered Obama More than Bush and Clinton Combined

Full article: TVNewser
The Center for Media and Public Affairs released a study that found nightly newscasts devoted 27 hours, 44 minutes to President Obama's presidency in his first 50 days. That compares to 7 hours, 42 minutes for Bush and 15 hours, 2 minutes for Clinton's during the first 50 days of their first terms.

A Fierce Outbreak of Swine Flu Coverage

Full article: Washington Post
Howard Kurtz
The story spread rapidly in the news vacuum, when federal officials declared a health emergency, within hours the coverage of a swine flu outbreak had reached fever pitch. With front-page headlines, constant cable-news updates and top-story status on the evening newscasts -- the sheer volume of media attention suggested a full-blown crisis. But are they going overboard?

Consquences of Media Consolidation: Lack of Coverage About Women of Color

Full article: Feministing
If news coverage is based on ratings, there is a good chance many important issues will not be covered equitably. Media consolidation has effectively silenced coverage of many disenfranchised communities, including women of color.
