Top 1 Percent of Mobile Users Consume Half of World's Bandwidth, and Gap Is Growing

Kevin J. O'Brien
The world's congested mobile airwaves are being divided in a lopsided manner, with 1 percent of consumers generating half of all traffic. The top 10 percent of users, meanwhile, are consuming 90 percent of wireless bandwidth, a new study says.

So Much Fun. So Irrelevant.

Thomas L. Friedman
What if the 2012 campaign were actually about the world in which we’re living and how we adapt to it? What would the candidates be talking about? I just don't remember any candidate being asked in those really entertaining G.O.P. debates: "How do you think smart cities can become the job engines of the future, and what is your plan to ensure that America has a strategic bandwidth advantage?"

Boom or Not, Internet Bandwidth Prices Still Falling

Full article: GigaOM
Om Malik
It's becoming increasingly difficult to do anything without using the Internet these days. If that isn't enough, we need more bandwidth, and we want faster connections. You'd think the need for copious amounts of bandwidth would drive up prices for wholesale connectivity. But thankfully (for consumers) the price of Internet bandwidth continues to fall.

Wider Streets for Internet Traffic

Anne Eisenberg
Our taste for the Internet is insatiable -- traffic is growing so fast that its transmission systems may soon be filled to capacity. But scientists are coping, finding ingenious ways to satisfy our deep bandwidth hunger.

Now That's Bandwidth! International Internet Links Add 13Tbps in 2010

Nate Anderson
International Internet backbone links saw another surge in capacity during 2010, with total bandwidth growing by 55 percent. That's tremendous growth -- but it's actually slower than in years past, and carriers are having no trouble keeping up with demand.

Bandwidth: Why Fast Is Important in a Global Economy

Full article: BroadbandBreakfast.com
Leonard Grace
Bandwidth is the basic foundation for Internet traffic as a connector to everything important in our lives. Whether it is basic bandwidth for connecting to family and friends, or a super fast highway for global reach and competitiveness in the business world, bandwidth constitutes the speed at which we connect as a global presence.

Should Broadband Data Hogs Pay More? ISP Economics Say 'No'

Nate Anderson
If most Internet costs are fixed (and the National Broadband Plan agrees that they are), and if bandwidth is dirt cheap, what "charges" are heavy Internet users ringing up for ISPs like Time Warner?

The iPhone, Net Neutrality and the FCC

Andy Kessler
Apple's new iPhone 4 might succeed, except that AT&T isn't providing enough bandwidth capacity. Without more broadband capacity and much higher speeds, the productivity applications needed to drive the next wave of growth in the economy will be stillborn.

Todd Spangler
About 10 percent of the world's broadband subscribers generate more than 60 percent of all Internet traffic, with the average connection chewing up about 11.5 Gigabytes of Internet traffic per month, according to a Cisco survey of more than 20 service providers. Meanwhile, the top 1 percent heaviest global subscribers account more than 20 percent of all traffic.

Simple, Justifiable Bandwidth Goals for America

Geoff Daily
An important first step to reaching sensible bandwidth goals is to realize that we should have at least two tiers: baseline served and fully served. And we need goals not just for today but also for tomorrow that are primarily based on the needs of users rather than the limitations of technologies.
