Twitter and Journalism: It Shouldn't Be that Complicated

Mathew Ingram
The Associated Press caused a minor furor recently when the news-wire service updated its social-media policy and forbade its writers from expressing any opinions on Twitter, including implied opinions caused by retweeting others.

Why Does the Future of News Have to Be Us Versus Them?

Full article: GigaOM
Mathew Ingram
The future of news, and of journalism as a whole, isn't something anyone has a really firm grasp on. Huge reports on the state of the industry written by journalistic institutions are filled with questions, but very few answers. A recent report, has taken aim at what they see as the real culprit: "future of news" visionaries like Clay Shirky and Jeff Jarvis. But is that really where the problem lies?

Is Google Helping Journalists, or Co-Opting Them?

Mathew Ingram
Is Google helping journalists get discovered more easily, or has it crossed the line by trying to promote the use of its own social network over others?

Newspaper Digital Revs Won't Offset Print Decline

Full article: MediaPost
Erik Sass
For at least a decade, newspaper publishers have been looking to the huge potential growth offered by digital advertising revenues -- but now, 10 years on, digital revenues still make up a relatively small part of the business. Worse, slow growth in digital advertising means it's unable to offset the precipitous, ongoing decline in print revenues.

When Is Google Going to Really Disrupt the News Business?

Full article: GigaOM
Mathew Ingram
Google has already disrupted plenty of markets -- search and online advertising being just two of them -- and is trying hard to disrupt many others, including mobile. So why is the company so backward when it comes to the news business?

Is It Google's Job to Somehow Improve the Media?

Full article: GigaOM
Mathew Ingram
While news used to be a tightly controlled product from a few mainstream sources, there is now an explosion of content from virtually everywhere — some of it good and much of it not so good. Legendary TV newsman Ted Koppel suggested it is somehow Google's duty to fix this problem, and Google CEO Larry Page seemed to agree. But relying on Google to choose what news we should read is a very slippery slope.

Why Netflix Is a Cautionary Tale for Newspapers

Full article: GigaOM
Mathew Ingram
When Netflix first announced that it was changing its pricing plans for its legacy DVD-by-mail service as a way of promoting its digital streaming business, we wrote about how this was very similar to what newspapers have been trying to do -- that is, moving people from the high-cost legacy side of the business to the lower-cost digital side. So what kinds of lessons can we draw from the furor over Netflix's pricing change and the impact it has been having on the company's revenues?

Judy Muller
At a time when doomsayers are predicting the death of traditional journalism, thousands of small-town weeklies are doing just fine, thank you.

Why I'm Optimistic about the Future of Local Media

Josh Stearns
My optimism about the future of local media is inspired by the fact that it is being led by people who believe that we can change ourselves so we can change our media so we can change the world.

Is Journalism As We Know It Becoming Obsolete?

Mathew Ingram
There have been plenty of obituaries written for the newspaper business, most of which have a kernel of truth to them -- but is journalism as we know it at risk as well?
