Stacey Higginbotham
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson recently called his company's copper-based DSL broadband technology "obsolete." This is a stunning admission from one of the nation's largest DSL providers.

Fairpoint Meets Vermont Deployment Promises

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
Fairpoint Communications acquired Verizon's unwanted New England DSL network in 2008, then subsequently imploded under the not so watchful eye of New England regulators. Fairpoint's trying to make a comeback, recently exiting from bankruptcy and so far successfully adhering to merger conditions that require they deliver DSL to the majority of customers in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. But the DSL is slow for its rather high price.

Frontier Downplays the Landline's Demise

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
Frontier Communications has been working very hard to downplay the fact that the vast majority of the company's customers still reside on frequently expensive, last-generation 1.5-3 Mbps DSL. It's good that Frontier customers don't need "ultra-fast" broadband, because they're not going to get it.

Is DSL Dipping or Diving?

Annie Lindstrom
The nation's largest cable and telecom providers hit a new low in the number of new broadband subscribers they signed up in the second quarter of 2010. Additions were the fewest in any quarter over the past nine years, according to a new report.

Unions Ramp Up Opposition to Verizon-Frontier Deal

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
With the problems faced by Fairpoint and Hawaii Telcom after integrating Verizon's unwanted DSL networks, Verizon's new plan to offload an even bigger chunk of rural customers to Frontier is getting added scrutiny. Unions, who don't want cut backs on infrastructure investment or jobs, have started pushing harder to get the deal scrapped.

Fairpoint Still Has Enough Cash For Anticompetitive Lobbying

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
Fairpoint Communications has all but imploded from the acquisition of Verizon's Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont DSL networks. The carrier has skirted close to bankruptcy, faces state investigations for incompetence, and is now looking at a possible delisting by the NYSE. So it's interesting the company still has the cash on hand to spend on lobbying.

DSL Has Some Life Left in it as Qwest Rolls Out 40Mbps Tier

Full article: Ars Technica
Nate Anderson
Though fiber and cable operators can whip DSL in speed trials, Qwest is sticking with the older technology as a network upgrade means that 40Mbps DSL service (with 20Mbps upstream) is now possible—for some.

Nurture Connectivity Beyond DSL Technology

Mark T. Ansboury
Our nation's major communications providers suggest that, as part of an economic-stimulus package, tens of billions of dollars should go toward expanding their DSL and cable-modem services in underserved urban and rural communities. Furthermore, these same providers believe DSL is broadband. Would this be a wise investment? We think not.

Eulogy for a Good Friend: RIP, Twisted Pair Telephone Line

Nate Anderson
As cable and fiber-to-the-home connections gain subscribers and speed, DSL is already becoming less relevant. And if telcos don't act, their link to the home threatens to disappear altogether.
