Gannett Shutters Hyper-Local NJ Sites

Full article: Media Post
Erik Sass
After much talk about the future of news relying more on user-generated contributions, Gannett's early experiments in crowd-sourced local news content has fizzled. It shuttered the company's 17 "hyperlocal" news sites in New Jersey, which operated under the umbrella InJersey.com site. The local news sites were scuttled by layoffs among Gannett staffers, who were still contributing the lion's share of the content.

Lawmakers Give New Jersey Network Time to Become 'Self-Sustaining'

Juliet Fletcher
The future of New Jersey Network as the state's only public broadcaster remains in doubt, as Gov. Chris Christie and Democratic state lawmakers decide how they will reform the publicly funded entity. Christie wants to cut funding in half and push NJN, a station that runs five TV channels and a radio system with seven frequencies, to become "self-sustaining" by year's end.

Elise Young
NJN's future is in the Legislature's control, as it decides whether a commission should study transferring New Jersey's public television and radio stations' assets to an independent non-profit.

Dear N.J. Gov.: Don't Gut Your Public Media

Megan Tady
If ever there were a state in need of a vicious press corps, with reporters camped out at the statehouse with the vigilance of teenage girls trying to score Justin Bieber tickets, New Jersey would be it. But now the state-owned TV station faces severe budget cuts that could cripple its ability to deliver local news coverage.

Comcast, Cablevision Turn to Wi-Fi in Effort to Retain Customers

Venuri Siriwardane
To keep their broadband customers from fleeing to rival phone companies, New Jersey cable operators are trying a new perk: free Wi-Fi. Comcast is testing Wi-Fi service at about 120 N.J. Transit rail stations, targeting its high-speed Internet subscribers who commute. Cablevision's Optimum Wi-Fi program was launched throughout the tri-state area last fall.

Born to Run -- Jersey's Star Ledger Rocks On

Full article: Editor & Publisher
Joe Strupp
The Star-Ledger of Newark, New Jersey, in 2008 survived a shutdown threat and eliminated many staffers, and it now faces some serious financial uncertainty. But if the Garden State loves one thing, it's success against long odds. So: retreat, but no surrender.

Newspaper Shuns Web, and Thrives

David Carr
TriCity News of Monmouth County, New Jersey, is prospering because it aggressively ignores the Web. Its Web site has a little boilerplate about the product and lists ad rates, but nothing more. The newspaper had just published the biggest issue in its history and is double-digit profitable.

Joe Strupp
While the paper is slowly letting go of some 151 newsroom folks who took buyouts last month, at least two longtime journalists have been reassigned to the mailroom.
