Todd Spangler
A group of satellite broadband providers -- Dish Network, EchoStar Technologies, ViaSat/Wildblue Communications and Hughes Network Systems -- told the FCC that they should be allowed to participate in the Connect America Fund. The group stated that satellite broadband providers should "be permitted to compete on an equal basis with other providers for funding to add the capacity needed to serve the unserved."

New Mexico Delegation Supports Universal Broadband

The New Mexico Delegation sent a letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski supporting the goal of universal broadband for the agency's National Broadband Plan to bring high-speed Internet to all Americans.

In the letter, the U.S. Congress members point to their state's ranking as forty-sixth among all states in the percentage of Internet users and highlight the need for broadband ubiquity, particularly for geographically isolated communities.

Making Universal Broadband Service a Reality

Full article: Christian Science Monitor
Until this year the federal government has been largely absent from the delivery of fast Internet service. That's been the work of the private sector. But the private sector can't do it all. Companies only go where there's profit, which means that many poor neighborhoods, and rural and tribal areas don't have access to a high-speed Internet connection.

Tech Memo to Team Obama

Stephanie N. Mehta
Merely improving the availability of fast Internet networks isn't going to help the incoming Obama administration meet its economic goals. Rather, it is the utilization of broadband networks that tech executives think will stimulate the economy and help the president-elect achieve the broad policy goals he's set forth.
