Dutch Government Wants Penalties for P2P Downloads

Full article: Ars Technica
Nate Anderson
The Netherlands currently allows private users to download copyrighted songs and movies without penalty, so long as they are for personal use; uploading, however, counts as "distribution" and comes with penalties. This approach is unusual in Europe, and the Dutch government announced plans to change course.

Only 9 Percent (and Falling) of U.S. Internet Users Are P2P Pirates

Full article: Ars Technica
Nate Anderson
In its 2010 annual report, recorded music's global trade body said that the industry would "struggle to survive unless we address the fundamental problem of piracy." Just how "fundamental" a problem is that piracy? Not very, as new research suggests that only 9 percent of U.S. Internet users even use peer-to-peer networks at all, down substantially from 2007.

Public pressure may have forced Comcast to work with BitTorrent on finding ways to distribute large Internet files, but their collaboration is no substitute for actual policy that would keep the Internet open. And 25 rural Vermont towns have joined in a regional effort to bring high-speed fiber optic Internet access to their homes.
