Adi Robertson
Here in the United States the Net Neutrality debate rages on, but Canadian Internet users officially lost the battle three years ago. Now, however, one Internet service provider, Bell Canada, has agreed to stop peer-to-peer throttling.

Dump Big Internet Service Providers

Jason Magder
About 94 percent of Canadians get their Internet service from one of a handful of large telecom companies. Now a Net Neutrality lobby group is urging people to dump Big Telecom in droves, in the wake of a decision last week by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecom Commission.

Jamie Sturgeon
Striking an unexpectedly interventionist tone, the Canadian broadcast regulator slapped a host of new conditions on the country's biggest telecom conglomerates.

Feel Bad About Your Broadband? Canada Has It Worse.

Stacey Higginbotham
Shaw, a Canadian ISP that has a broadband cap of 750 GB for its fastest tier, said this week that its online video service would be exempt from data caps. It also offers an unlimited plan as well. Such a move places Shaw's upcoming Movie Club service at an advantage to a competitive movie streaming service such as Netflix which is already having to downgrade its default service in Canada because of bandwidth caps.

Metered Billing: It's a Lack of Competition, not Congestion

Matthew Lasar
The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission has been holding hearings over the last few days about its controversial (and for the moment suspended) move to let Bell Canada bill independent ISPs on a wholesale byte-by-byte basis. Newspaper reports suggest that at least some of the commissioners aren't buying arguments that the telcos need usage-based billing to "discipline" consumers so that they won't congest networks with excessive downloading.

Joan Engebretson
Canada's telecom regulator CRTC has set a plan in place to achieve nationwide broadband deployment that has some striking similarities to efforts in the U.S. -- as well as some key differences.
