The Senate Commerce Committee did the right thing today by unanimously voting out of committee a "resolution of disapproval" sponsored by Sen. Bryon Dorgan (D.N.D.) that would overturn the FCC’s Dec. 18 decision to relax the longstanding limits on how much media one company can own in your town.

historic presidential election. Because so many leave college with, on
average, $20,000 in debt during a recession economy and are entering a
job market with fewer opportunities to earn a decent living, energized
young Americans are yearning to help solve America's problems, address
the mounting issues of income disparity, and contribute to the health
and well-being of their communities. At the same time, a call for
enhanced national public service is part of the presidential
candidates' campaign platforms.

Thus, this is a singular moment in which to demand a larger and
bolder vision to propel all Americans, across generations, fully into
the 21st century. It's time for a Digital New Deal.

Pentagon Pundits Jeopardize America's Free Press

Yesterday, the New York Times exposed a secret Pentagon campaign to infiltrate the media with pro-war propaganda.

The scheme reaches all the way to the Bush White House, where top officials recruited dozens of "military analysts" to spread favorable views of the war via every major news channel -- without revealing they were working from Pentagon scripts and often lobbying for major military contractors.

Spreading "covert propaganda" is illegal under federal law. Congress must investigate these military pundits and their ties to the Bush administration, defense contractors and our national news media.

We focuses on issues of media ownership, the future of the Internet, and noncommercial or public media. We have always seen these three issues as intimately connected to the health of our democracy.

A recent story points out the overlap of these three issues and reminds us why each is so vitally important. Last week NBC Universal (owned by General Electric) announced that it was teaming up with an ad agency to create special shows around new products. Now ad writers and company shills will be writing your sitcoms.
