Schiller to Public Radio: Don't Just Sit There, Take Risks

Andrew Phelps
Vivian Schiller has a warning to her former colleagues at NPR: "Your continued existence is not guaranteed." But that warning -- delivered in a talk at Harvard's Shorenstein Center -- wasn't just about the congressional fight over public funding. It was about what she sees as the imminent threat of Internet radio in cars.

Four Key Challenges for NPR's Next CEO

Full article: Poynter Institute
Mallary Jean Tenore
Whoever the NPR Board of Directors eventually chooses for this position will assume leadership of an organization that in recent months has lost its CEO, its senior vice president for fundraising and its senior vice president for news while its federal funding has been challenged. How is a new CEO to handle all of this? Some NPR staffers have some ideas.

The NPR Body Count

Jack Shafer
What makes the executive culture at nonprofit NPR so murderous? There are as many bodies on display here as in a production of Hamlet. The cause of all this NPR palace intrigue can be traced to the most un-American of all American institutions: The committee.

They Brought a Tote Bag to a Knife Fight: The Resignation of NPR's CEO, Vivian Schiller

Full article: Press Think
Jay Rosen
The decision to let Vivian Schiller go originates in a delusion, captured so well by Jon Stewart during the Juan Williams controversy when he told NPR: you brought a tote bag to a knife fight! The delusion is that you can keep doing that and somehow it will all work out in the end. These people want to destroy you. You don’t get to decide whether you have political enemies or not. The enemies have that power. But you can decide how to respond to them.

NPR Flubs Response to Schiller Controversy

Full article: Columbia Journalism Review
Joel Meares
On the surface, it's easy to see why Vivian Schiller was scapegoated for for the organization's bungling of the Juan Williams controversy and the recent James O'Keefe sting. By lopping off its own head today, NPR is essentially saying, "Look how fair we are" in an effort to preempt right wing attacks and further calls for government defunding. But the network's overreaction to this manufactured semi-scandal might end up doing it more harm than good.

NPR Executive Vivian Schiller Resigns Under Pressure from Board and CPB

Full article: Washington Post
Paul Farhi
Vivian Schiller, NPR's top officer, was forced out of her job after two years, just as a Republican-held Congress has accelerated the debate on cutting funds for public broadcasting. Schiller officially resigned, but there was little doubt she was ousted under pressure from NPR's board and officials from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. "The idea was to placate the Hill," said one person involved in the decision. "They needed a human sacrifice." But it's unclear whether Schiller's departure will change any minds in the public broadcasting debate.

Vivian Schiller, NPR Chief Executive, Resigns

Full article: New York Times
Brian Stelter and Elizabeth Jensen
NPR said that it's board had accepted the resignation of its chief executive, Vivian Schiller. Her resignation comes at a precarious time for public broadcasting, as Republicans in Congress are trying to strip NPR and its member stations of tens of millions of dollars in federal funds. NPR has been consumed by controversy as of late; most recently, a Republican filmmaker released a video that showed one of NPR's fund-raising executives repeatedly criticizing Republicans and Tea Party supporters in a conversation with people posing as prospective donors.

Don't Let Gotcha Politics Undermine NPR's Mission

National Public Radio recently announced the resignation of President and CEO Vivian Schiller. Craig Aaron, managing director of the Free Press Action Fund, made the following statement: "We shouldn't let the sideshow of hidden-camera stings and gotcha politics get in the way of the real issue here: A vital local public service needs public support to continue its role in providing news, culture and educational programming."
