How Google Beat AP with Iowa Caucus Results (and Why It Matters)

Full article: Poynter Institute
Steve Myers
Eight news sites decided to use Google's experimental election results for map tracking the results of Iowa's GOP caucus. They made this choice for three reasons: Google's data were easier to deal with than the files provided by the Associated Press; the sites could share what Google built; it was free; and it was faster. Could Google challenge the AP as the sole provider of all state and national election results in the United States?

New York Times, Washington Post, AP Found Newsright

Lucas Shaw
Newspaper organizations are banding together under an organization titled NewsRight to license and profit from the spread of their content online. NewsRight puts code into every piece published by the sites it works with -- 841 newspaper sites at this point -- and that code travels with the story across the web. If someone else steals it, NewsRight's database registers it.

The AP Brings a Quasi-Competitor into the Fold

Full article: Nieman Journalism Lab
Andrew Phelps
In 2008, eight Ohio newspapers, upset with what they saw as high prices charged by the Associated Press, rebelled against the wire to form their own statewide news-sharing service. That inspired Roy Hewitt, longtime sports editor at the <em>Cleveland Plain Dealer</em>, to form a similar organization for sports journalists. Now the Associated Press is embracing, not shunning, the network. The NSCSN will begin using the AP's Marketplace distribution platform to share content.

AP Expands Its Content-Distribution Experiment with Nonprofit News

Megan Garber
The Associated Press announced that it will be expanding its project to distribute content from nonprofit news outfits to newspapers. The expansion builds on the partnerships the cooperative -- itself a nonprofit -- had developed with the public-interest news providers <em>ProPublica</em>, the Center for Public Integrity, the Center for Investigative Reporting, and the Investigative Reporting Workshop.

Joel Meares
AP staffers in 39 bureaus across the country picketed outside their bureau offices early this week, pressuring the news wire to back off a plan to freeze pensions for some 1,250 workers.

AP Kills Internships, Says They'll Resume in 2012

Full article: Maynard Institute
Richard Prince
The Associated Press confirmed late Friday that it is suspending the 26-year-old internship program that has launched the careers of many a successful journalist, but said it would resume the program in 2012. Appeals from Unity, the Asian American Journalists Association, the Native American Journalists Association, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Society of Professional Journalists have all gone unheeded.

Associated Press Monitors CNN Since Dropping Service

Michael Calderone
CNN President Jim Walton told staff in June that the network was dropping its contract with the Associated Press and would provide its audience with content that is "distinctive, compelling and, I am proud to say, our own." But the AP has been closely monitoring CNN's coverage and claims that the network routinely uses the wire service's reporting.

Heedlessly Hijacking Content

Full article: New York Times
David Carr
In a clear violation of copyright and professional practice, two Web sites posted the article about Gen. Stanley McChrystal in its entirety before <em>Rolling Stone</em> had a chance to publish it. What crafty guerrilla site or bottom-feeder would do such a thing? Turns out it was Time.com and Politico that blithely stepped over the line and took what was not theirs.

Murdoch and the AP Hate Them, but Aggregators Are Still All the Rage

Gillian Reagan
The Associated Press and News Corp. are circling blogs and aggregators, preparing to attack with their "news registry" system that intends to catch unlicensed use of their content and punish publishers with fees. Meanwhile, in New York, Hearst was cozying up to aggregators -- by launching one of their own.
