Lucas Shaw
Newspaper organizations are banding together under an organization titled NewsRight to license and profit from the spread of their content online. NewsRight puts code into every piece published by the sites it works with -- 841 newspaper sites at this point -- and that code travels with the story across the web. If someone else steals it, NewsRight's database registers it.

Keith J. Kelly
The New York Times, as expected, has agreed to sell its regional newspaper group, which includes mostly small daily papers in Florida, the Carolinas and Louisiana, to Halifax Media Holdings for $143 million in cash. Newspaper Guild President Bill O'Meara said he hopes "they would use some of the proceeds to settle our contract."

If WikiLeaks Is Dying, then the NYT Is Partly to Blame

Full article: GigaOM
Mathew Ingram
The reality is that both Julian Assange and WikiLeaks have been the targets of a sustained attack by the U.S. government and companies like PayPal and Visa. And if the New York Times is less than choked up about WikiLeaks' demise, it's because the organization is a competitor that was beating the Times at its own game.

Paywall Won't Offset NYT Print Declines

Erik Sass
The New York Times has raised substantial circulation revenues from its online paywall, but these are unlikely to make up for continuing losses on the print advertising side.

NYT Paywall: 12 Percent of Subs Are International

Full article: paidContent
David Kaplan
Part of the bet that the New York Times Co. made when it began building the metered paywall for NYTimes.com was that the audience consisted of more than just Northeast readers. The company is seeing subscribers from across the nation, and is even getting some international acceptance as well. That could augur well for plans to roll out a similar paywall for the New York Times Co.'s International Herald Tribune site this fall.

The Washington Post didn't run with former reporter Jose Antonio Vargas' personal account of his life as an undocumented immigrant because they were scared off by an inconsistency they found during weeks of editing the story.

Patricia Sullivan
The news last week of Jill Abramson’s promotion to executive editor of the New York Times cheered feminists and female journalists alike, perhaps no one more than the women who sued the newspaper in 1974 over sex discrimination in hiring, pay and promotion.
