Let's Talk About the Broadband Cap Gap

Full article: GigaOM
Stacey Higginbotham
Comcast's monthly 250 GB data cap might have been fine for data usage in 2008. But the media usage has risen and the cap hasn't increased by a commensurate amount. As residential broadband becomes essential for how we do our jobs, as well as for consumer entertainment and other web-based products, it's time for big companies to start taking a hard look at how ISPs policies will affect their employees and their ability to offer services and perhaps give a call to their favorite lobbyist. If left unchecked, this won't stay a consumer issue for very long.

The Open Internet: A Case for Net Neutrality

Full article: The Open Internet
You can access the Internet through your ISP as much as you want for anything you want. All your data goes through a single connection, and you're charged one monthly fee. But with the FCC's new Net Neutrality rules, all that could change. Here's an infographic that tells the story.

FCC: Yup, We're Going to Stop 'Paid Prioritization' on the Net

Matthew Lasar
The FCC is releasing the details of its new Net Neutrality Order in stages. Although the FCC's new ban on "unreasonable discrimination" for wired ISPs allows certain kinds of traffic discrimination (not all bits need be equal), the agency made clear that "paid prioritization" deals with Internet companies are unlikely to be allowed. But will it hold up in court?

Tracy Rosenberg
After every major content provider scuttles to sign a preferred content deal with one or another major Internet service provider, God help the consumer trying to locate some not-so-preferred content. With the FCC's new Net Neutrality rules, we may be regulating the Internet equivalent of the Pony Express.

Internet Rules with No Bite Seem a Tad Heavy on the 'Neutrality'

Levi Sumagaysay
Net Neutrality theoretically gets a boost from action by the FCC, which has yet to release the full set of rules. But from what they heard at the FCC meeting, Net Neutrality backers -- consumer advocacy groups and companies that deliver content, such as Netflix, Amazon.com and Facebook -- were either disappointed or reacted cautiously.

Maury Litwack
To many Internet users, this law’s implication is vague and hard to follow. To one group of users, this law, its implication and why they needed to speak out was clear. Reddit PAC was the brain child of Eddie Geller, a Los Angeles comedian who was upset about the possible defeat of Net Neutrality. And he's only begun to fight.

Net Neutrality: FCC Approves Regulation of Internet Providers

Devin Dwyer
Critics of the FCC's Net Neutrality rules warn those steps could include implementation of useage-based pricing for accessing the Internet at home and preferential treatment for companies that pay extra for "fast-lanes." They say service providers could also begin to pick and choose which websites can run faster than others over their networks.

'Open' Internet Just a Pipe Dream

Full article: MSNBC
Wilson Rothman
As long as you buy Internet access via cable provider, wireless carrier or telecom, you're going to have to play -- or at least pay -- by their rules. They'll just have to make sure to tell you what those rules are. That seems to be the real gist of the FCC order that was ratified today. The bad news for consumers is that Internet service providers have power to "manage" their traffic as they see fit, and to ration it -- that is, to charge for tiers of usage or amounts of data used.

Net Neutrality Supports Independent Art

Lloyd Kaufman
Verizon and Google are hiding behind vocabulary, convinced that by renaming an issue, they can fool the American public. Yet, whether it's directly setting up a payment-based Internet, or conceiving and executing a parallel system, the issue is the same: by commodifying the dissemination of information, the media giants strike at the core values of freedom of speech and expression upon which this country was built.

M. Chris Riley
We don’t have a vendetta against certain types of Web management prioritization. Our fight is over discrimination -- network operators choosing, on behalf of their own subscribers, what gets priority and what doesn't, or what traffic gets through and what doesn't.
