Comcast Raises Rates; Competitors Prices Go Up as Well

Full article: Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Kristi E. Swartz
Many of metro Atlanta Comcast customers started off the year with higher cable bills as the nation’s top cable provider raised rates for most of its TV packages. But with limited industry oversight and little competition, frustrated customers may find little options elsewhere as DirecTV and AT&T’s U-verse bump up their prices as well.

Comcast: The Conglomerate with a Heart

Full article: Bleacher Report
Josh Friedman
Comcast cable rates vary by package, but the company charges about $75 per month for cable in Philadelphia. Many of their subscribers would gladly switch to Dish Network or DirecTV, but Comcast has not allowed those companies to carry Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, which shows a majority of Phillies, Flyers and Sixers games. Comcast has gone so far as to broadcast CSN Philadelphia on terrestrial, not satellite, equipment, thus giving them an excuse to bypass FCC rules that would otherwise require the cable giant to provide satellite companies access to the sports channel.

Brooks Boliek
Are you ready for some … cable commercials?

Comcast customers watching the New York Giants eventually defeat the San Francisco 49ers had their viewing pleasure rudely interrupted with a couple of accidental commercials for the cable operator's Xfinity service. The sudden random appearance of the commercials or fragments of the commercials as plays were being run angered viewers who lit up social networks after the glitch.

Verizon, Comcast Send Marketing Deals to FCC in Airwaves Review

Full article: Bloomberg News
Todd Shields
Verizon Wireless and cable companies led by Comcast filed agreements with the U.S. government to sell each other's services, and said the deals shouldn't be part of a regulatory review of their $3.6 billion airwaves sale. The marketing arrangements announced alongside the airwaves sale last month don’t require approval by the FCC, the companies said in a filing posted on the FCC website.

If Comcast Can't Make It in the Wireless Biz, Who Can?

Full article: GigaOM
Kevin Fitchard
Comcast tried hard to become a mobile operator, but it failed to find a way to make the business work. That admission is a surprising one to say the least, and if Comcast is being forthright it also raises some troubling questions about the state of the U.S. wireless industry.

Comcast Challenges FCC's Decision on Tennis Channel Complaint

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
John Eggerton
Comcast has challenged the FCC's Tennis Channel program carriage complaint decision on two fronts. The cable operator asked the full commission to reverse the administrative law judge's finding that it had discriminated against Tennis Channel and challenged the FCC for not dismissing the complaint initially because it was filed after the statute of limitations had expired. The cable operator also argued that even if the FCC commissioners do not reverse the ALJ, they should vacate the channel-placement order.

D.C. Denison
Cable bills in Boston are on the rise again, just 10 months after sharp increases in fees charged by Comcast Corp. provoked both Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Senator John Kerry to request the FCC take action against rising prices.
