Verizon's Worrisome Cable Deals

Full article: New York Times
As regulators moved to block the AT&T deal, Verizon Wireless was buying big chunks of spectrum from the nation’s largest cable carriers and signing agreements with them to sell each other’s services to consumers around the country. The potential for these agreements to curtail competition in both wireless and wireline industries is troubling, and should be examined by the Justice Department and the FCC.

Does Verizon Cable Deal Spell Death of FiOS Expansion?

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
Verizon's spectrum deal will allow cable operators to offer a compelling quadruple play, without having to worry about the one thing that has driven what passes for competition in their makets the last decade: FiOS. Such a wink-and-handshake noncompete clause warrants investigation. But given the FCC's total disinterest in seriously promoting real landline broadband competition -- consumer advocates probably shouldn't hold their breath.

Shira Ovide
As summer heats up, so are the television wars. Time Warner Cable is planning an advertisement slamming rival TV-service provider Verizon's FiOS, which in recent days took out its own ads aimed at poaching Time Warner Cable customers on the basis that they may have their Disney shows blacked out in a contract impasse.

Todd Spangler
Verizon will pay New Jersey $795,000 to settle the state's lawsuit alleging the telco used "deceptive and misleading" marketing, sales, billing and customer-service practices related to its FiOS services.
Boston, 'a Copper Hole in the Fiber Donut,' Demands FiOS

Verizon is currently wiring up New York City with fiber optic cables, but Boston mayor Thomas Menino wants to know why FiOS isn't coming to his city anytime soon. Menino has a theory, one that he recently aired during a radio interview: Verizon is retaliating.

Is Verizon FiOS Putting the Hurt on Cable

Stacey Higginbotham
Verizon reported second-quarter results and saw revenue rise while profits fell. But those of us who care about the fate of broadband should note that the carrier is ramping up its fiber-to-the-home triple play -- and likely stealing customers from cable providers.

Time for More Access

Kent Gibbons
Cablevision's refusal to sell the HD versions of its regional sports networks in New York to Verizon could be an issue that seals the case for eliminating the loophole that lets cable companies withhold some of its programming to competitors, avoiding program-access rules established by Congress that helped make satellite TV and telco TV businesses possible.
