Juliana Gruenwald
Leslie Moonves, president and CEO of CBS, said that the FCC should not intervene in the process that Congress established two decades ago for cable companies and others to negotiate fees with broadcasters for the use of their programming.

Sinclair to Pull Stations from TWC Systems

Full article: TV Newscheck
Mark K. Miller
Sinclair's most recent financial offer -- a monthly per-station increase that averaged 10 cents per subscriber -- was rejected by TWC, Sinclair said. The company said that TWC "refused to provide a financial counter-proposal, effectively ending negotiations." As a result, Sinclair television stations will no longer be carried on Time Warner Cable systems after midnight on Dec. 31.

Sister Spat

Full article: Susan Crawford Blog
Susan Crawford
Comcast wants to make sure that it has crushing leverage in dealing with the media conglomerates, so it’s buying NBCU. It will have the upper hand in almost every battle, and will be able to beat back ESPN’s high prices. But the larger, systemic problem in the retransmission game is that the entire system serves everyone except competition and lower prices.

Full article: New York Times
Brian Stelter and Bill Carter
The FCC stepped up its pressure on Cablevision and News Corporation, signaling just how seriously the feud over retransmission payments is being taken in Washington. The chief of the FCC's media bureau, William T. Lake, reminded both companies that they have a "statutory duty to engage in ‘good faith’ negotiations."

Who Will Battle Big Cable for Consumers?

Angela Carella
With the growing number of retransmission disputes, pressure is mounting for the Congress and the FCC to step into the dispute between Fox and Cablevision. But big money from big cable and big networks have so far managed to clog up any true reform to the system.

Cablevision Blackout Impacts Fox Ratings

Full article: Media Post
David Goetzl
The Fox blackout on Cablevision that has kept the network off the air in a huge chunk of the market, led to a massive ratings drop for this week's "House" episode in New York. But the New York Giants game suffered less than some expected -- which may also be the case for the late news on the Fox station.

Public Knowledge Tells FCC It Must Prevent Harm to Future Programming Competition

Fox's decision to cut off access to its online programming to Cablevision subscribers shows that "the current generation of dominant content and content delivery networks are trying to control the next," Public Knowledge told the FCC in a letter. The incident shows that programmers "are willing and able to limit their online content only to ISPs who are willing to 'pay to play.'"

One Reason Fox Is Reluctant to Arbitrate its Contract Dispute with Cablevision

Full article: Los Angeles Times
In its standoff with Cablevision over a new deal for the cable operator to carry its local TV stations in New York and Philadelphia, News Corp.'s Fox has steadfastly refused to go the arbitration route. If arbitration sets the rate lower than what Time Warner Cable is paying, Fox would likely have to adjust that deal.

Cablevision-Fox Spat Could Affect Comcast-NBC Deal

Ira Teinowitz
It’s looking increasingly like Fox's spat with Cablevision could wind up having repercussions for Comcast's deal for NBC Universal. At issue is an unprecedented tactic Fox employed early in the Cablevision dispute and only for hours -- blocking Cablevision's internet subscribers from accessing Fox content on Hulu.
