Apple's iPad and the Human Costs for Workers in China

Full article: New York Times
Charles Duhigg and David Barboza
In the last decade, Apple has become one of the mightiest, richest and most successful companies in the world, in part by mastering global manufacturing. Apple and its high-technology peers have achieved a pace of innovation nearly unmatched in modern history. However, the workers assembling iPhones, iPads and other devices often labor in harsh conditions. Problems are as varied as onerous work environments and serious -- sometimes deadly -- safety problems.

Joe Aimonetti
Holiday earnings reports are being posted, and Verizon's indicates that more than half of its smartphone sales were iPhones. This resulted in a revenue surge for its wireless division, but because of heavy subsidies, an overall decline in profits.

Siri Could Become a Political Minefield for Apple

Darrell Etherington
Apple addressed criticism that Siri, the virtual assistant built in to every iPhone 4S, couldn't retrieve location information for abortion clinics when asked and instead returned results for antiabortion centers. Apple's official statement is a perfect example of how to respond to a politically charged situation with the textual equivalent of plain-Jane oatmeal.

Full article: Ars Technica
Chris Foresman
Samsung threatened to have Apple's next-generation iPhone banned in South Korea before the device was even announced. Now, however, the company is backing down from that threat after a successful launch of the iPhone 4S on its home turf. Instead, according to Samsung, it will focus on its current ongoing global legal battles with Apple.

Zach Epstein
Apple was undoubtedly losing sleep over the fact that Consumer Reports refused to "recommend" its iPhone 4 due to the attenuation issues affectionately referred to as Antennagate -- Consumer Reports continuously praised the iPhone 4 despite saying it couldn't recommend the phone -- but now the Cupertino-based company can finally sleep easy.

Nick Wingfield
No wonder Apple says Siri -- its voice-activated "virtual assistant" for the new iPhone -- is in beta. For the second day in a row, Siri suffered intermittent failures that prevented people from using it.
