Want Rural 21st Century Broadband? Form a Co-Op or Wait Indefinitely for Someone Else to Provide It

Phillip Dampier
Parts of rural Minnesota are teaching the nation a lesson or two about how to deliver rural broadband -- form a community co-op and provide it yourself, or wait forever for a commercial provider to deem it sufficiently profitable to deliver a reasonable level of service.

Connect Minnesota Releases 2011 Residential Broadband Adoption Survey Results

Full article: Connect Minnesota
Connect Minnesota released new residential broadband adoption survey results revealing the top trends in technology use among key demographics in the state. According to the survey, approximately 28% of the population still does not subscribe to broadband. Most notably, the majority of low-income, senior, disabled adult, and Hispanic households are without broadband at home, leaving them facing an uphill battle in keeping up with essential online resources, job and educational opportunities, and social services.

Broadband Summit Asks How to Close Rural Digital Divide

Full article: Minnesota Public Radio
Dan Olson
A new survey out this week shows that a majority of rural Minnesotans have access to faster Internet connections. Yet some other trends are not as hopeful. While more than 87 percent of those making $50,000 a year or more have a computer at home, only 42 percent of those making less than $25,000 do. The rural Internet divide impedes better health care, education and business development in those parts of the state.

John Eggerton
Addressing a broadband summit at the University of Minnesota, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said that some people still aren't treating broadband as a national priority. The chairman conceded that participants at the summit would be expected to agree that broadband is a priority, but said: "I do want you to know that is not the uniform opinion in Washington or in our state governments."

Leslie Brooks Suzukamo
The United States is lagging in broadband deployment, and that will cost it in job creation and the future delivery of education and health care services, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said Tuesday at a summit on high-speed Internet communications in Minneapolis.

Chris Dykstra
The journalism industry is evolving under the broad, democratizing influence of the Web. What a "journalist" is and what it means to "publish" will continue to change in the coming years. The idea that the State of Minnesota can restrict the number and kind of press organizations renting space at the Capitol for being partisan, "different" or for publishing in new mediums doesn't belong in a mature understanding of the First Amendment, journalism or free enterprise.

A few weeks ago, Google announced their own efforts to expand broadband through a trial of high-speed fiber-optic network which would deliver speeds of one Gigabit per second (1Gbps). As part of their application, Duluth, Minn., has even created an amusing video, saying that all first-born children will be named Google.
