FCC Takes Steps to Implement the Local Community Radio Act

Full article: Federal Communications Commission
The FCC took initial steps to implement the Local Community Radio Act to promote community radio through the licensing of low power FM and FM translator stations. The Commission is seeking comment on a proposed processing policy for pending Auction No. 83 FM translator applications based on the spectrum available for LPFM in specific markets.

Megan Tady
Commercial broadcasters are less than thrilled that they'll soon have new neighbors on the nation's radio spectrum. They're worried about keeping up with hundreds of new noncommercial Low Power FM stations that will soon launch.

Radio's Fall -- Part One: No Money, Mo' Problems

Radio is still the best communications technology for reaching the American people. It is free to listen, of course, and community radio provides citizens with access to the public airwaves, and opportunities to amplify voices underserved by NPR and Clear Channel. So why doesn't the social justice community at large get behind the buildout of community radio?

Congress Passes Landmark Community Radio Act

Full article: Pitchfork
Amy Phillips and Ryan Schreiber
A significant bill was passed by both the House and Senate: the Local Community Radio Act. This legislation allows for the creation of new non-commercial stations on American airwaves-- a number that could reach to the hundreds or even thousands. This is a major victory for those aspiring to become community broadcasters, and an extremely exciting development for community-driven radio nationwide.

Timothy Karr
Little noticed but extremely important to progressives, on Saturday afternoon Congress passed the Local Community Radio Act. This legislation opens up radio spectrum to hundreds, if not thousands, of local independent radio stations (also known as LPFM). Its passing will bring new choices and voices on the radio dial nationwide.

Jeff Mapes
Gordon Smith is no longer one of Oregon's U.S. senators, but community radio activists are trying to paint him as still pulling secretive strings in Congress. Smith is now president of the National Association Broadcasters, which is fighting legislation that would allow the creation of hundreds of low-power, non-commercial radio stations around the country.
