Work is expected to begin by fall on construction of 1,100 miles of new, high-capacity, fiber optic communications line through much of Maine. The goal of the project is to provide affordable, high speed Internet service to areas and customers not presently served, and those who are under-served.

Fairpoint Still Has Enough Cash For Anticompetitive Lobbying

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
Fairpoint Communications has all but imploded from the acquisition of Verizon's Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont DSL networks. The carrier has skirted close to bankruptcy, faces state investigations for incompetence, and is now looking at a possible delisting by the NYSE. So it's interesting the company still has the cash on hand to spend on lobbying.

Tux Turkel
In a "classic private equity deal," the investment group seeking to buy Blethen Maine Newspapers has negotiated a "bargain basement price" based heavily on the value of real estate. The goal in such a deal is to buy at a low price in a bad economic environment and grow profitability.
