More Journalists Behind Bars in 2011

Full article: New York Times
David Carr
In times of significant worldwide conflict, everyone is at increased risk, including the journalists who cover those events. According to a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists, the number of journalists imprisoned across the world shot up 20 percent, reaching a 15-year high in 2011.

Protest Puts Coverage in Spotlight

Full article: New York Times
Brian Stelter
As police officers cleared protesters last week from Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan, the birthplace of Occupy Wall Street, they made sure most reporters were kept blocks away, supposedly for their own protection. But in almost every other respect, mainstream news media outlets have been put right in the middle by the movement.

Timothy Karr
Since the beginning of his crackdown against the Occupy Wall Street movement, New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg has gone to great lengths to present himself as a champion of the First Amendment. But the free speech rhetoric coming from City Hall hasn't matched the reality experienced by journalists at the front lines of the protest.

Journalist Is Detained in China for Article on Sex Slaves

Full article: New York Times
Andrew Jacobs
For a nation not yet inured to lurid and senseless crime, a report that a former civil servant in central China kept six women enslaved in an underground bunker -- and that he killed two of them -- was shocking enough. But perhaps almost as disturbing, at least to some readers, was that the journalist who exposed the crime more than two weeks after the suspect's arrest was detained by security agents who accused him of revealing state secrets.
