Dave Potvin
A dramatic, outrageous, unprecedented assault on the 1st Amendment has been largely ignored by the mainstream media, many of whose members were among the victims. At least 50 journalists were detained or arrested while covering the Republican National Convention.

Arrest During Republican National Convention Imperils Photographer's Future

Ruben Rosario
There were 818 arrests in the Twin Cities during the Republican National Convention. Jason Nicholas was one of them. Unlike most arrested, however, Nicholas, 38, a freelance photographer, is behind bars in New York and could serve more than a year in state prison as a result of his arrest in St. Paul.

'Stay Out of Jail Free:' A Closer Look at RNC Embedding

David Brauer
The carrot for reporters embedded with St. Paul police during the Republican National Convention, other than inside access: They wouldn't be told to leave the scene -- even though other journalists were subject to arrest if they didn't follow orders to disperse. Did that alter their coverage?

Where’s the Outrage over Media Mistreatment at the RNC?

Adam Reilly
Given the media’s reputation for self-absorption, it’s remarkable how little attention the press has paid to the crackdown on journalists during September’s Republican National Convention.

Rich Broderick
More than two dozen other speakers testified before a crowd of more than 250 at a town hall meeting in St. Paul called by 2nd Ward Councilmember Dave Thune to hear citizen reactions to the type of law enforcement used before and during the RNC that made targeted arrests of journalists and medics.

Elizabeth Dinovella
The crackdown on free expression in the streets of St. Paul never became a storyline on TV. Instead, talking heads described the McCain and Palin campaign pulling out of St. Paul with fresh enthusiasm, a mostly unified party, and a new message of reform, however undefined and factually dubious.

Although St. Paul is doing the right thing by dropping the charges against journalists arrested during the RNC, there is more that should be done to prevent such occurrences from happening in the future.
