The Cable TV Access Crisis

Full article: AlterNet
Eric K. Arnold
With over 100 public and educational channels disappearing since the mid-2000s, we need to have a big rethink about quality public-access TV. A bill currently before the House of Representatives called the Community Access Preservation Act could prevent hundreds of funding-challenged PEG stations nationwide from going belly up. And innovations in open source software are showing some promise.

Wally Bowen
If you were to create a map of all public-access TV channels in the United States, shaded green to burnt orange to signify funding and longevity, the South would look like the Sahara desert. Acknowledging this geographical reality is critical to understanding the crossroads Asheville, N.C., public-access channel now faces.

America pays only $1.37 per person on public media at the moment. Craig Aaron of Free Press is not asking for the $80 per person they spend in Great Britain, or even the $22 per they spend in Canada, and certainly not the $565 per person we all spent already to bail out AIG. But he thinks that $5 per person would work wonders.

Reinvigorating Public Media

Full article: American Prospect
Josh Silver
Leadership on public media is needed now -- both in local communities and in Washington. Our biggest obstacle isn't money or technology; it's imagining the alternatives and harnessing the political will to make them a reality. Three major reforms are needed to reinvigorate public media.

You can help protect community television by filing a comment with the FCC. The filing deadline is midnight Wednesday, April 1.

Media Minutes: February 13, 2009

Community television advocates have asked the FCC to investigate AT&T’s treatment of public, educational and governmental channels on its U-verse cable TV system. And with tools for mapping and data gathering getting easier to use, people are taking government transparency into their own hands.
