Mark Barrett
Asheville, N.C., Public access television channel URTV is closing its downtown studio because of financial problems but will continue broadcasting using video submitted by area residents. Lindsey Sanders
When people think about funding cuts and public media, they usually think about NPR and PBS, but a recent report reveals that another vital community media source is perhaps even more threatened: public, educational and governmental access stations, otherwise known as PEG stations.

John Eggerton
American Community Television has called for PEG commitments as part of any AT&T-T-Mobile merger. ACT, which advocates for protections and better treatment/placement of public, educational and government (PGE) channels, pointed to Comcast's "willingness" to make PEG access commitments in securing FCC approval of its deal to join up with NBCU, and wants the AT&T/T-Mobile meld to include PEG provisions on AT&T's U-Verse video service.

Community Media Outlets Under Attack

Beth McConnell
More than 3,000 Public, Educational and Government access channels across the nation provide a vital platform for community-produced video from full coverage of local town halls, to student-produced shows about topics that matter to their campus, to city council meetings and debates. Tthe programming on these stations is critical in creating an engaged, informed and active community. Unfortunately, PEG stations are under attack in states across the nation.

ACT: New Jersey Legislation to Eliminate PEG Access Television Harmful

American Community Television has learned that a bill before the New Jersey State Legislature would completely wipe out Public, Educational and Government access television in that state. "This is the most aggressive piece of industry backed legislation we have seen to date," said John Rocco, President of ACT. "Other states have seriously damaged our local community media, but New Jersey seeks to wipe it out all together."

WCTV, City Could Lose $444,000

Bill Engle
A piece of legislation in the Indiana General Assembly this year would, if passed, drastically change local programming on Whitewater Community Television. House Bill 1131 could eliminate the franchise fee Comcast pays to the city of Richmond. The city, in turn, shares a portion of the fee with Whitewater Community Television, which uses the money for operations.

WCTV Offers Vital Access

Full article: Palladium-Item
A measure introduced in the Indiana General Assembly, like too many measures that have inexplicably been introduced by legislators over the years with insufficient local input, would eliminate an annual franchise fee paid by local cable television. The loss of those monies locally would create real hardship. Citizens should rally against this measure.
