Topeka Cable Operators Seek Help from Governor over 'Virtual Triopoly'

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
John Eggerton
Topeka cable operators wrote to Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, asking him to advise the FCC to block or condition the sale of ABC affiliate KTKA-TV to PBC Broadcasting. They argue that Topeka's NBC affiliate and FOX affiliate are owned by New Vision Television, which has shared services agreements with PBC Broadcasting in Youngstown, Ohio, and Savannah, Ga. ACA is concerned that the sale will create a "virtual triopoly" in Topeka and "coordinate" retransmission negotiations for three of the Big four affiliates.

Media Minutes: April 8, 2011

Google’s announcement that Kansas City, Kansas, is the winner of its year-long search for a city worthy of a 1GB fiber network left hundreds of other cities disappointed. And some of the losers may have their state’s anti-municipal broadband laws to blame for their loss. And the problems with American media are no laughing matter. Yet somehow, comedians are making it funny.
