New Ruling May 'Grease the Wheels' of RIAA Litigation Machine

One of the biggest questions facing both defendants and the RIAA in the record labels' legal campaign against P2P users is whether making a file available for download over a P2P network equates to distribution as defined under the Copyright Act. In a long-awaited ruling, a federal judge essentially validated the RIAA's position that having songs available in a KaZaA shared folder violates the distribution right under the Copyright Act.

Comcast Cable CTO: Bandwidth Hogs Will Experience Slowdowns

Comcast recently announced a deal with BitTorrent that left me dazed and confused. It was basically a roundabout way for the cable company to backtrack from its P2P traffic-blocking gaffe. In describing the deal, Comcast tried to shift the focus away from their so-called "network management" -- and by extension, the limitations of their network that prompted them to resort to traffic manipulation in the first place.

Who's to Say Comcast Won't Meddle with Net Again?

Comcast and BitTorrent last week announced an agreement to collaborate on technologies to make it more efficient to conduct peer-to-peer file sharing over Comcast's cable modem network. This announcement came in the wake of intense criticism of the giant cable company and Internet service provider for controlling its customers' use of BitTorent to exchange files.

Canadian ISPs Limiting Access to CBC Shows

Major Canadian ISPs are limiting access to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's shows, made available online using BitTorrent.

Reflections on the Comcast-BitTorrent 'Detente'

I read the news this week of an arrangement between Comcast and BitTorrent, Inc. (called a "non-deal" by some) with great interest. My initial reaction was "Great, Comcast has finally seen the light. Cooperation is a good thing." Then I took a moment to put it all in perspective and reflect back on Vuze's original objectives when we filed our Petition for Rulemaking with the FCC in November 2007.

Spirit of Internet at Risk, Campaigners Warn After Comcast Move

A promise by the biggest broadband provider in the U.S. that it would stop discriminating against users who swap music and video online has failed to quell a grassroots movement demanding legislation to protect equal access to the Internet.

Blocking Foes Aren't Ready to Trust Comcast

In what might be seen as an exercise in crisis management, Comcast finally agreed Thursday to alter the way it manages its network, committing to a "protocol-neutral" method in which any traffic throttling would occur only at peak times and without targeting certain applications.

Comcast + BitTorrent: Don't Believe the Hype

What a surprise to open today's Wall Street Journal and see that Comcast and BitTorrent are suddenly BFF. Apparently, all Comcast's blocking, lying, blocking, denying, blocking, seat-filling, blocking, snubbing its nose at the FCC, and more blocking was just a big misunderstanding.

Commissioner Copps' Statement on Comcast-BitTorrent Announcement

The following statement can be attributed to Commissioner Michael J. Copps in response to the Comcast-BitTorrent announcement today. "Today's announcement confirms my belief that the FCC needs to play a proactive role in preserving the Internet as a vibrant place for democratic values, innovation and economic growth. If it had not been for the FCC's attention to this issue earlier this year, we would not be having the conversation that we are having now among network operators, edge content providers, consumers and government about the best way to implement reasonable network management.
