France Three Strikes Law Suggests a Huge Percentage of French Citizens at Risk of Losing Internet Access

Mike Masnick
When you have a law that a huge percentage of the population violates, you have to wonder if the law is just. The first data is out about the French 3-strikes HADOPI program, and apparently copyright holders have sent in notices claiming 18 million incidents of unauthorized file sharing.

France Thinks Subsidizing Music Purchases Will Fight Piracy

Karl Bode
Under pressure from the music industry, France recently became one of the first countries to kick customers off the Internet for file trading, despite the long list of problems with such a plan. The country's now showing just how well heeled to the entertainment industry they are by subsidizing music purchases with taxpayer dollars for all youngsters.

Songwriters Guild: Network Neutrality Means More Piracy

Mike Masnick
There has been an effort made by some to try to connect the totally unrelated issues of Net Neutrality and unauthorized file sharing together. There is no connection between the two, but that won't stop busy lobbyists from doing their best to drum up such a connection.

Why Piracy Is Not Actually A Problem for the Music Industry

Full article: TechDirt
Mike Masnick
There are many reasons why the recording industry is in trouble that have nothing to do with unauthorized file sharing. Many of the inefficiencies taken out of the market were costly to the record labels. By embracing what the new market allows, the labels can decrease their own costs, while creating an even larger market for themselves.

UK Consumers, Big Content Battle Over Three-Strikes Rules

Nate Anderson
The UK is in the midst of a consultation on how to involve both content owners and ISPs in some sort of response to P2P file-sharing. The government is pushing a co-regulatory approach.

File-Sharing Lawsuits at a Crossroads, After 5 Years of RIAA Litigation

Full article: Wired
David Kravets
Targets for the RIAA's massive litigation campaign include the elderly, students, children and even the dead. Fines under the Copyright Act go up to $150,000 per purloined music track. But billions of copies of copyrighted songs are shared each year and some of the fundamental legal questions about file-sharing have gone unanswered.

Comcast Does About-Face: Declares Love for P2P

Full article: Wired
Betsy Schiffman
Comcast, perhaps the most aggressive opponent of file sharing after the RIAA, has seen the light. After testing P4P, an experimental file-sharing architecture that reduces network costs and bandwidth usage, the company is closer to embracing file sharing on its own network.

Mike Masnick
If AT&T's biggest concern about P2P file-sharing apps is clogging its 3G wireless network, why does it allow streaming apps to run on the iPhone?
