FCC's 'Star' Media Regulator Copps Bows Out

Full article: Politico
Brooks Boliek
The FCC is losing its rock star regulator. At 71, FCC Commissioner Michael Copps is retiring after 10 years. The FCC is defined by whoever is chairman. The chairman is the Mick Jagger; he has the mic and controls the policy agenda. The commissioners are the bandmates and over the past 10 years Copps has often been the heart and soul -- the Keith Richards -- of the panel. Media consolidation was and still is Copps' policy anthem.

Gautham Nagesh
Several telecom policy stakeholders used the December open meeting of the FCC to bid farewell to Democratic Commissioner Michael Copps, who will retire at the end of the year. Commissioner Robert McDowell sounded a bittersweet note, complimenting Copps for his willingness to work across party lines and paying tribute to his eloquence.

FCC's Michael Copps Worried About Media Landscape

Full article: Los Angeles Times
Joe Flint
For over 10 years, FCC Commissioner Michael J. Copps played the role of Howard Beale at the regulatory agency. Like the TV anchor from the movie Network he was often mad as hell and not going to take it anymore. Copps, who is resigning from the FCC at the end of the month, has always been far more outspoken than the typical regulator. He was unafraid to offend the powerful companies he was charged to keep in line.

FCC Commissioner Michael Copps told the Future of Music Coalition that "Our media is in trouble and America is in trouble — and the plights of both are inter-connected," repeating his opposition to media consolidation and asserting that "getting our journalism and our media right is step number one in getting our democracy right."

FCC Commissioner Michael Copps Remark Upon Receiving the Newton Minow Award

Full article: FCC
At the 29th annual Everett C. Parker Awards, FCC Commissioner Michael Copps received the Newton Minow award. As he accepted the award he said, "When I became a Commissioner more than a decade ago, these were the visions and dreams I wanted to help realize. There were -- there are -- those who have disagreed with me, sometimes more than occasionally, but I hope no one ever doubted my desire to make our media as transformative as Everett Parker and Newt Minow knew it could be."

FCC Commissioner Calls for National Effort to Save News Media

Josh Smith
In remarks to the National Newspaper Association, FCC Commissioner Michael Copps said while journalists have the lead role in fixing their industry, there is wide support for reform. "Glitzy infotainment substitutes for real news and 'if it bleeds, it leads' determines newsworthiness," he said. "Maybe all that bleeding has something to do with why America isn't leading the way we used to. I have had a front-row seat to watch this devastation for 10 years on the FCC."

Gautham Nagesh
FCC Commissioner Michael Copps called for schools to teach K-12 students news literacy during a recent speech. "If we expect there to be a demand for quality news, then we need to teach the lessons on how to determine quality," Copps said, stressing that the programs would be voluntary for local schools.

Michael Copps, the FCC's Voice for Media Democracy

Full article: Washington Post
Katrina vanden Heuvel
The Seattle Times said he could "fire up crowds like a revivalist preacher." Progressives have called him a rock star. Even conservatives, with whom he generally butts heads, have called him "a voice in the wilderness." For the last decade, he has often been the lone fighter in a struggle that goes to the very core of our democracy. And yet, you've probably never heard of him. He is Michael Copps, FCC commissioner and tenacious advocate for a public-interest approach to regulating the media.

Broadcast News Industry Under Fire

Full article: Star Press
Jeffrey M. McCall
During a series of speeches in the past five months, FCC Commissioner Michael Copps has blasted television news for providing "mindless infotainment masquerading as news." However, little media attention has been given to Copps' remarks. Big media corporations don't want viewers to ponder that these corporations have minimized their obligations to society while maximizing profit potential.
