Since the FCC No Longer Listens, AT&T Tries Congress

Full article: GigaOM
Stacey Higginbotham
In recent weeks AT&T has gone into overdrive defending its efforts to stop the FCC from setting any rules that might limit AT&T's attempts to bid for the hoped-for spectrum. AT&T's machinations are puzzling, since it has managed to pick up a considerable amount of spectrum under the rules that the FCC has set in previous years for auctions. And it actually seems like AT&T wouldn’t want a completely neutered FCC overseeing the wireless industry, especially given the amount of partisan bickering that can hold up its favored legislation in Congress.

Can't We All Get Along?

Full article: National Journal
Juliana Gruenwald
If you thought the sparring between AT&T and Sprint ended with the demise late last year of AT&T's bid to buy T-Mobile, think again. AT&T is once again on the opposite side of a major telecom issue with Sprint, a fierce critic of the AT&T/T-Mobile merger, and several other smaller rivals. The issue this time is over legislation aimed at freeing up more spectrum to meet the public's growing demand for wireless technologies.

Walden: Unlicensed Is Important, But FCC Should Not Give Away Billions

John Eggerton
A House version of incentive auction legislation would not give the FCC free rein to carve out more of the reclaimed broadcasters' spectrum for unlicensed wireless. There was plenty of response to a letter from more than 40 House members pushing for the FCC to have that flexibility.

Political wrangling is holding Super Wi-Fi spectrum hostage. The House has tacked on amendments to its payroll tax bill that spell big trouble for the FCC and spectrum use. And a new bill in the Illinois legislature would allow people to record on-duty police in public without permission.

Wireless Crunch Faces Political 'Solutions'

Full article: San Francisco Chronicle
James Temple
The FCC has said we'll reach a spectrum deficit as soon as 2013 if nothing is done. It will mean slower speeds, dropped calls, higher prices and less mobile innovation. Among other things, the challenge demands freeing up underused capacity in the airwaves, such as the television "white space" used as a buffer between channels. But the FCC, Congress, industry players and consumer advocates are arguing about the appropriate approach.

AT&T & Dish Fight over Spectrum, but Will Either Build a Network?

Kevin Fitchard
Report after report points to AT&T marrying Dish Network after Ma Bell’s forced breakup with T-Mobile, but given the companies’ increasing belligerence, you wouldn’t think that was the case. Instead of using public airwaves to deploy real networks, operators seem to be playing high-stakes poker with their licenses.

Eric Haywood
Last Week, a group of ASU students started the petition entitled "Arizona State University: Reduce the Costs of Education for Arizona State University Students" at the Change.org petition site. This petition requested signatures to support the reduction in the cost of education for ASU students. Arizona State University has now blocked all access to Change.org for all of it's over 50,000 students and over 5,000 faculty and employees.
