A Deadly Proposal

Next President Should Launch the Digital New Deal

 When
more than 3 million voters under age 30 turned out for recent caucuses
and primaries, they staked a claim as a major force shaping this
historic presidential election. Because so many leave college with, on
average, $20,000 in debt during a recession economy and are entering a
job market with fewer opportunities to earn a decent living, energized
young Americans are yearning to help solve America's problems, address
the mounting issues of income disparity, and contribute to the health
and well-being of their communities. At the same time, a call for
enhanced national public service is part of the presidential
candidates' campaign platforms.

Thus, this is a singular moment in which to demand a larger and
bolder vision to propel all Americans, across generations, fully into
the 21st century. It's time for a Digital New Deal.

Join the Conversation - Live Blogging the Stanford FCC Hearing

Today people will have their first chance to speak directly to all five FCC commissioners about the irresponsible and discriminatory behavior of Comcast and other companies who want to block and filter the Internet. At Stanford University, hundreds of people are gathered to speak out about the importance of an open Internet for education, innovation, competition, and free speech.

But you don’t have to be at Stanford to make your voice heard too. Join the conversation right here as Free Press staffers blog live while the hearing unfolds.

Stanford Hearing an Internet Wake-Up Call

Get ready for Round Two in 2008's Internet Battle Royale. At stake is whether we should allow a handful of giant corporations to close the Web for their own gain, or whether we should put in place baseline protections that will leave our Internet open to the millions of people who use it.

Low-Income Residents Get High-Speed Access

Last summer, when Earthlink pulled the plug on plans to build a citywide Wi-Fi network in San Francisco, it looked like only those with the money to pay for high-speed Internet access (or with a decent laptop and a good map of free hotspots) would be able to get it. Such bad things should happen more often.

Mayor Gavin Newsom's office tried to garner good press by selling his efforts to bring free Wi-Fi to San Francisco as an effort to bring broadband to the poor, under the auspices of Project Tech Connect.
