Just days after British Prime Minister David Cameron said Rupert Murdoch's bid to take full control of BSkyB would face a delay or even total derailment, the U.K.'s Independent is reporting that the deal "appeared to be dead in the water." The news comes on the heels of a report revealing additional phone-hacking incidents at the company as well as payments made to police officers.

Broadcast's Youth Market Starts at 44

Full article: Advertising Age
Brian Steinberg
While advertisers get ready to plunk down billions on prime-time broadcast TV during this upfront -- and make no mistake, they will -- consider this statistic: The median age of viewers of regular prime-time fare is nearing 51. That's two years past the age widely considered to be the point of no return for the most-coveted advertiser demographic.

The Real Post-Oprah Era Opportunity

Paige Albiniak
Syndicators have been salivating at the chance to grab the time slots occupied by the Oprah Winfrey Show since the first whiff of rumor that Oprah might end her program. But as the industry looks to fall 2011, the real opportunity is proving to be stations' ability to cut costs rather than find the next big thing.br

What Janet Jackson Reveals About Broadcasting

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
John Eggerton
The 2004 Janet Jackson-Super Bowl reveal seems like ancient history. But when the Third Circuit Court of Appeals hears new oral arguments in the case on Feb. 23, the future of broadcast television will be very much at stake.

Can Gordon Smith Save Broadcasting?

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
John Eggerton
New National Association of Broadcasters President Gordon Smith carries a big responsibility-making the case for broadcasters facing a sea change in technology, formidable economic hurdles, and a government that is hungry for spectrum and eyeing broadcasters' beachfront real estate. Can he save broadcasting?

Spectrum Showdown: Broadcasters Facing Another Fight

Full article: InternetNews.com
Kenneth Corbin
If there's been one consistent refrain from the wireless industry in recent years, it is that the government agencies overseeing spectrum need to make more of it available to support the expansion of wireless data networks. But, again, we're dealing with a finite resource, so that spectrum has to come from somewhere. And that's where the fight will be.

FCC to Rethink Reporting Requirements in Media Ownership Forms

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
John Eggerton
Broadcasters will still have to file expanded ownership reports starting Nov. 1, but, at least for now, won't have to include certain non-attributable interests. Broadcasters argued the reporting of those interests could actually discourage investment in minority and women-owned outlets.

Broadcast Stations Going Dark: Issues to Think About

David Oxenford
Each day, there seems to be a report about broadcast stations going off the air because of the current economic downturn - some permanently, some temporary, and some being given away to charity. As this situation becomes more common, there are issues that are worth mentioning.

Memo to the FCC's New Chairman

Harry A. Jessell
The TV station business is in a bad way, the victim of economic troubles, cutbacks in advertising and increasing competition for audience from cable and now the Internet. The FCC needs to immediately address the troubles of TV broadcasting and take steps to bolster the financial health of the industry.
