For First Time in Decades, Photojournalist Captures Images of Live Presidential Speech

Full article: Poynter Institute
Steve Myers
President Barack Obama's address on U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan marked the first time the press has photographed a president during a live speech in several decades. The address was the first since the White House decided to discontinue re-enacting speeches for still photographers, a practice that was brought to light after Obama’s announcement that the U.S. had killed Osama bin Laden.

Disappearing Photographs

Brian McDermott
Old assumptions about how visual media are less important than the written word stubbornly persist, despite the fact that Pew reports that the majority of Americans get their news from television and the Internet. Instead of recognizing the growing importance of photojournalism and video, institutions often curtail and control access for visual journalists.

Chris Hondros: How He Got That Picture

Photographers Chris Hondros and Tim Hetherington were killed on April 20 in Misurata, Libya. Hetherington was the better known of the two for his documentary, Restrepo. But Hondros' work was powerful with a recognizable humanity even when it depicted the worst.

Daryl Lang
The U.S. command in Afghanistan that last month banned pictures of military personnel killed in action has reversed its policy. The change came as the Pentagon called the ban an "isolated incident" amid media scrutiny.

Photos of Military Deaths in Afghanistan Banned

Daryl Lange
The U.S. military in eastern Afghanistan recently changed its media embed rules to ban pictures of troops killed in the war. Pictures of American military deaths are rare, but until now they have not been officially banned during either of the ongoing wars.

Photojournalism Enters a Golden Age

Gloria Goodale
The overall cultural premium placed on real-time information has opened the way for a greater appreciation of the sometimes unsettling realities that lie at the heart of good photojournalism. Reality is popular now in a way that it certainly wasn't in the early days of photojournalism.

Daryl Lang
The Department of Defense would be required to grant journalists access to ceremonies honoring fallen military personnel under a bill introduced in the House. For the first time since Vietnam, photographs of soldiers' flag-draped caskets would be allowed.

Flickring Out: What Will Become of Photojournalism in an Age of Bytes and Amateurs?

Full article: Columbia Journalism Review
Alissa Quart
Photojournalists have been struggling with downsizing, the rise of the amateur, the ubiquity of camera phones, sound-bite-ization, failing magazines (so fewer commissions), and a lack of money in general. Like print journalists, photographers are scrambling not only to make sense of the new world, but to survive in it intact.
