Waxman Scrutinizes Traffic Pumping After Google Voice Inquiry

Full article: Washington Post
Cecilia Kang
Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and other key House lawmakers have sent letters to the CEOs of top telecom firms, launching a review into "traffic pumping" phone practices. Traffic pumping is the practice of routing conference and adult calls to rural areas, which cost carriers more in fees to connect those calls.

ISPs Continue to Cry When People Use Their Product

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
Around the world, the largest ISPs have been whining about how the dropping cost of bandwidth and hardware, their significant profit margins, and abundant new revenue streams make it hard for cash-strapped telecos to build out enough capacity to handle demand. If they cry long and loud enough, will they force content companies to pay for neglected network upgrades?

Telecoms Win Dismissal of Wiretap Suits

Eric Lichtblau
A federal judge threw out more than three dozen lawsuits claiming that the nation's major telecommunications companies had illegally assisted in the wiretapping without warrants program approved by President George W. Bush after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

ISPs Shouldn't Pretend To Be Content Companies

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
A recent study of global fiber to the home claims that U.S. telcos are doing a number of things wrong -- nursing copper instead of deploying fiber being chief among them. The report also takes telcos to task for trying to be network operators and content/service developers.

Karl Bode
Vint Cerf, co-creator of the TCP/IP protocol and chief Internet evangelist at Google, says the telcos generally act like children having tantrums. "I'm not going to build this system unless you give me three scoops of ice cream and a pony."
