Race in the Media --The Wrong Kind of Lens

Full article: StopBigMedia.com
Adebe D.A.
Disney's debut film, The Princess and the Frog, Mattel's new Black Barbie line, and the American tour of the historic Ethiopian fossil, "Lucy," present an opportunity for honest and successful discussions about race in the media. But what they really do is point to the media's failure to engage in these discussions in a way that fairly, accurately or thoughtfully addresses the subject of race.

Does Murdoch Agree with Glenn Beck or Not?

James Rucker
Rupert Murdoch is now trying to backpedal after saying in an interview with Sky News that Glenn Beck was right when he called President Obama a "racist." Now that he's been called out and the spotlight is squarely on him, Murdoch says he doesn't agree with Beck, but he won't explain what he meant or denounce Beck's rhetoric either.

Hispanic Group to CNN: Rein in Dobbs

Full article: Politico
Carol E. Lee
A leading Hispanic organization has launched a campaign to pressure CNN to rein in host Lou Dobbs. Democracia Ahora released a report based on interviews with Hispanic leaders about the impact of Dobbs' show. The results are not surprising: 90 percent of interviewees believe Dobbs is helping to create a negative image of Hispanics with his frequent criticism of illegal immigration.

Media Minutes: September 4, 2009

In response to ColorofChange.org's call for advertisers to stop airing commercials on the Glenn Beck Show after Beck's racist remarks, 57 companies have pulled their ads. And an appeals court threw out the FCC's ruling that cable companies can't control more than 30 percent of a market. But that doesn't mean that the agency gets to ignore the issue of capping cable ownership.

Media Minutes: July 17, 2009

Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) told FCC nominees Mignon Clyburn and Meredith Attwell Baker that the FCC was broken, and he expects them to fix it. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) asked Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor about the Internet and the First Amendment. And the mainstream media's racist and sexist coverage of Sotomayor's nomination is making Mary Alice Crim of Free Press angry.

Sexist, Racist Coverage of Sotomayor

Full article: StopBigMedia.com
Mary Alice Crim
Do descriptions like "Hispanic chick lady" and "this broad" help the public evaluate Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor as she faces her Senate confirmation hearing? Of course not. Yet the mainstream media have routinely spouted demeaning, sexist and racist language about Sotomayor instead of providing us with any substantive context or background about the judge.
