Forget Wireless Bandwidth Hogs, Let's Talk Solutions

Full article: GigaOM
Stacey Higginbotham
News about wireless bandwidth hogs, new session-based pricing from Leap Wireless and the appearance of a new website aimed at helping consumers understand their data caps and the limits those impose, all point to a growing problem in the wireless industry. And that problem isn't congestion. Rather, unless the industry figures out how to give people connectivity at a reasonable costs, wireless will always be luxury access technology and ubiquitous connectivity will be a pipe dream.

New Data Hogs in the Pen: Sprint Smartphone Users

Full article: ConsumerReports.org
Jeff Blyskal
Sprint's improving cellular service left AT&T in the dust in the Consumer Reports 2011 ratings. But now the Kansas-based carrier's smartphone users have taken the blue-ribbon prize away from AT&T's data hogs.

Verizon to Bludgeon Data Hogs with Fees

Full article: InformationWeek
Eric Zeman
Wireless network operators have yet to settle on the best policy for managing bandwidth hogs. Some believe throttling speeds is the answer, others think hard limits and sliding data fees will work. Verizon Wireless, on the other hand, thinks hardcore financial penalties will convince data hogs to use their fair share of the network.

Mobile Video Watchers Are Bandwidth Hogs

Full article: GigaOM
Bad news for mobile network operators: According to new research, on any given day, less than 10 percent of users watch video on their mobile devices -- but those users account for about two-fifths of all network traffic. That's a problem that will only get worse as mobile video viewing and video chat usage becomes more mainstream.

Did AT&T Just Call Us Fat?

Erika Morphy
AT&T plans to start placing caps on data uses on its DLS and U-Verse services beginning in May. To hear AT&T tell it, this will only apply to a small percentage of users -- 2 percent -- who use a disproportionate share of data. But how long will those percentages -- 98 percent of sanely-consuming Internet users versus the 2 percent of over eaters -- stay the same?

Tim Greene
Verizon will throttle back bandwidth available to the biggest data hogs on its wireless network in what it calls an effort to keep up service quality for everybody else.

Operators Are Sacrificing Bandwidth Hogs in the Name of Profits

Stacey Higginbotham
Unfortunately, bandwidth hogs and the network congestion they allegedly cause is a red herring designed to distract users from the real motive behind wireless pricing changes: Profits.

Should Broadband Data Hogs Pay More? ISP Economics Say 'No'

Nate Anderson
If most Internet costs are fixed (and the National Broadband Plan agrees that they are), and if bandwidth is dirt cheap, what "charges" are heavy Internet users ringing up for ISPs like Time Warner?

Jeff Bertolucci
The demise of the AT&T's all-you-can-eat unlimited offering is bad news for the small percentage of bandwidth hogs who, with their piggish downloading and streaming, are slowing Ma Bell's robust network to a crawl. But with the expected surge in video applications for wireless devices, we'll all be data hogs soon enough.

Marguerite Reardon
AT&T wants its iPhone users to use less wireless data, and it may consider new pricing models to curb users' data usage as it tries to keep up with growing demand.
