So What Is a Gigabyte for Mobile Users, Anyway?

Kevin C. Tofel
Verizon’s move this week to follow rival AT&T by eliminating unlimited data plans may not affect most smartphone users today, but could impact them in the future as handsets are used for more purposes. Deciding which data plan will be enough for a month of smartphone use, without choosing a higher priced plan that provides more bandwidth than is needed represents a growing challenge.

John Eggerton
Free Press called on Congress to investigate what it called "Internet overcharging schemes" to make sure they were not anticompetitive. The group was responding to AT&T's announcement that it will charge DSL customers who use over 150 GB per month.

200GB to 25GB: Canada Gets First, Bitter Dose of Metered Internet

Full article: Ars Technica
Matthew Lasar
Metered Internet usage is coming to Canada, and it's going to cost Internet users. While an advance guard of Canadians are expressing creative outrage at the prospect of having to pay inflated prices for Internet use charged by the gigabyte, the consequences probably haven't set in for most consumers. Now, however, independent Canadian ISPs are publishing their revised data plans, and they aren't pretty.

Karl Bode
Speaking almost in lock sync with the nation's largest wireless carriers, the FCC's Republican commissioners, Robert McDowell and Meredith Attwell Baker, pushed hard for usage-based wireless pricing. McDowell insisted that "pricing freedom is essential," and that flat-rate pricing "could lead to gridlock."
