ISPs Redirect Search Traffic on Yahoo, Bing, Raising Legal, Privacy Issues

Wendy Davis
More than 10 ISPs are redirecting search traffic on Yahoo and Bing, according to a new report. The report, which appeared in New Scientist, is based on research from the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley and says the ISPs are sending users who search for brand names directly to the marketers' sites rather than displaying the search engines' results pages.

Why Social Media Reinvigorates the Market for Quality Journalism

Vadim Lavrusik
At the Washington Post and other media organizations, referral traffic from social sites -- particularly Facebook and Twitter -- are outpacing the growth of referrals from search. This is largely because search links have largely been overtaken by paid links.

Regulators Prepare to Dig into Google-ITA Deal

Full article: New York Times
Brad Stone
Last week, Google announced a deal to acquire ITA, a Boston-area company that makes flight information software. The move will give Google a large foothold in the online travel search market, and control over a critical data source used by many of its competitors, including Kayak.com, Orbitz.com and Microsoft's Bing. But first comes the regulatory review.

Stephanie Bodoni
Google, owner of the world's most-used search engine, may face closer scrutiny as European Union regulators take a careful look at allegations of antitrust breaches in relation to Internet searches.

Belo, MediaNews May Block Google

Erik Sass
Two leading newspaper publishers -- A.H. Belo, the publisher of the Dallas Morning News, and MediaNews Group, publisher of the Denver Post -- are considering following Rupert Murdoch's example by preventing Google News from indexing online content behind newly erected pay walls.

Why Murdoch Can Afford to Leave Google for Bing

Full article: Advertising Age
Nat Ives
News Corp.'s talk about listing its sites exclusively on Microsoft's Bing sounds unpromising in several ways. But all of Rupert Murdoch's recent agitation and exploration are at least pushing one fact back to the fore: Web traffic only gets publishers so far in their quest for digital ad dollars.

News Corp. Weighs an Exclusive Alliance with Bing

Full article: New York Times
Tim Arango and Ashlee Vance
Microsoft has been in discussions with the News Corp. about a deal to pay to remove links to News Corp.'s news content from Google's search engine and display them exclusively on Bing. If such an arrangement came to pass, it would be a watershed moment in the history of the Internet and set off a fierce debate over the future of content online.

Murdoch, Microsoft, and Google

Ryan Chittum
So Rupert Murdoch is trying to squeeze the search engines for some cash. This move seems more likely to be an incremental one for the news industry as far as revenue goes -- even if it backfires. The implications for the search industry longer term, however, could be more interesting. It's hardly a silver bullet for the news.

Murdoch Madness

Jeff Jarvis
Were Bing to pay News Corp. to drop Google, it would be a double-play in Google's favor: Microsoft would lose money and gain little. And News Corp. would lose traffic.

Microsoft Will Not Save the News Industry

Full article: Abrupt Corner
The idea that a Web site has to pay to link to an item of news is completely against what the Internet is -- the free dissemination of information to all that seek it. If News Corp thinks Google is stealing the news, then they need to edit their robots.txt file to stop it. Otherwise stop whining and embrace what the Web stands for.
