The MPAA Dinosaur and the SOPA Debacle

Full article: Huffington Post
Hoyt Hilsman
The recent dust-up between the Hollywood studios and Internet companies reveals how out of touch Hollywood has become with its own customers. The idea of punishing consumers for ignoring Hollywood's business model is a futile strategy, as the music companies have learned over the past decade.

Dodd Calls for Hollywood and Silicon Valley to Meet

Full article: New York Times
Edward Wyatt
The startlingly speedy collapse of the antipiracy campaign by some of Washington's savviest players -- not just the motion picture association, but also the United States Chamber of Commerce and the Recording Industry Association of America -- signaled deep changes in antipiracy lobbying in the future. By Christopher Dodd's account, no Washington player can safely assume that a well-wired, heavily financed legislative program is safe from a sudden burst of Web-driven populism.

MPAA Attacks Ars for 'Challenging Efforts to Curb Content Theft'

Nate Anderson
The Motion Picture Association of America doesn't like us. According to the MPAA blog, "Ars Technica" is a "tech blog with a long history of challenging efforts to curb content theft." (If so, we're the only such tech blog that actually encouraged a now-current MPAA lawyer to do copyright coverage for our site and that recommended the pro-rightsholder book Free Ride in this year's holiday guide.)

Cato Institute Digs Into MPAA's Own Research to Show SOPA Wouldn't Save a Single Net Job

Full article: TechDirt
Mike Masnick
A study by the Cato Institute shows that statistics used by Rep. Lamar Smith to support SOPA don't hold up to scrutiny. Figures using MPAA numbers actually show that SOPA won't save a single net job for the U.S. economy.

WikiLeaks: MPAA Behind Aussie ISP Lawsuit

Full article: Ars Technica
Matthew Lasar
As a crucial Australian copyright lawsuit goes to its High Court for consideration, a new WikiLeaks cable from the U.S. State Department suggests that the force behind the action is anything but local. On the surface, it appears that the suit against iiNet -- on the grounds that the country's third biggest ISP hasn't done enough to crack down on illegal file sharers -- is an Australian content initiative. But according to the cable, the prime mover behind the suit is actually the Motion Picture Association of America, through the Motion Picture Association, its international arm.

MPAA Files Copyright Suit Against Zediva

Greg Sandoval
MPAA, the trade group representing the six major Hollywood film studios, filed a copyright suit in federal court against online video distributor Zediva. The suit has started the process that almost certainly will end with Zediva's demise.

Tough Job Awaits Dodd at the Helm of MPAA

Tony Romm
Chris Dodd could face stiff challenges as the new chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America. He's got to unite a fractured group of Hollywood titans and top studios prone to freelance in Washington, and he has to do it at a time when the industry's top priorities -- including protecting copyrights and cracking down on infringers -- are a big focus on Capitol Hill.

David Kravets
Christopher Dodd, the former five-term Democratic senator from Connecticut, was named to head the Motion Picture Association of America. Dodd, who just retired after declining to run for a sixth Senate term, replaces Bob Pisano, the lobbying group's interim chief since April.

John Eggerton
The Motion Picture Association of America has tapped former Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) as its new chairman and CEO. Dodd exited the Senate in January after five terms, and will look for some of the Irish luck to rub off on the posting with an arrival date of St. Patrick's Day.
