For the fourth time in four years, Time Warner Cable is pushing a bill in North Carolina to kill competition from more reasonably-priced municipal broadband systems. Public access TV shows like PhillyCam’s “UnSolved Philadelphia” are stepping up to fill gaps in the journalism world today. Yet, PEGs across the country are facing funding threats.

The Media and Democracy Coalition is pleased to partner with the Center for Media Justice/Media Action Grassroots Network (MAGNet), the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), and the United Church of Christ, Office of Communication, Inc. to convene another in our series of forums dedicated to preserving our civil rights in the digital age. These gatherings are a space for public interest media and telecommunications policy experts, media justice advocates and the larger civil rights and social justice community to come together for dialog and

Public Interest Groups to Hold Press Event to Call for Bold, Practical National Broadband Plan

On the date the National Broadband Plan was originally due to Congress, public interest groups will hold a press event to call on the Federal Communications Commission to ensure that the plan, now due March 17, contains a set of bold, practical goals and policy recommendations. The groups will outline specific recommendations backed by a strong, diverse coalition of public interest groups, and that must be in the plan if it is to succeed in improving U.S. broadband access and adoption.

A diverse group of organizations called on members of Congress to co-sponsor H.R. 2802, the Local Community Radio Act of 2007. This bi-partisan legislation would authorize the FCC to license hundreds – if not thousands – of new Low Power FM radio stations in cities, towns, and suburbs across the country.
