Trusting Comcast to Fund Independent News?

Full article: SavetheNews.org
Josh Stearns
Nonprofit news outlets across the country can now apply to become a local news partner of Comcast-NBC. These new partnerships could mean a new funding stream for nonprofit local journalism, but they come with some serious caveats. After all, this is the same company that pulled funding from a small non-profit youth media group for tweeting a message that the company didn't like. Just imagine what could happen if a Comcast-funded news outlet runs a story counter to the company's bottom line.

Increasingly, Nonprofits Fill a Need for Investigative Reporting

Full article: Washington Post
Howard Kurtz
Investigative reporting is increasingly being outsourced, and often offices off K Street serve as a boiler room for research that the big boys are less able to afford. The Center for Public Integrity is hardly a traditional news operation, but it is taking on a more prominent media role.

Advocacy, Membership Groups to Push Non-Profit News

Full article: MediaShift
Jaclyn Schiff
The erosion of the traditional business model for news has led many to go down the non-profit path. The result is a slew of new non-profit news websites. The Bay Citizen is the newest and joins the likes of ProPublica, MinnPost, and the Texas Tribune, to name just a few. But as the closing of the non-profit Chi-Town Daily News last year indicates, running a non-profit isn't easy.

Jeff Bercovici
The New York Times is opening its pages to an outside entity, entering into a news-gathering partnership with the Bay Citizen, a nonprofit journalism start-up based in San Francisco.

Big Bucks Bankroll Nonprofit Journalism

Full article: Washington Post
Howard Kurtz
There was a time when most major journalistic investigations were carried out by newspapers, when revenue was abundant and "I-teams" were all the rage. But with nearly all papers hurt by cutbacks and some in bankruptcy, ambitions have often been downsized. And that has left a vacuum for ventures that don't have to worry about Wall Street expectations.

Steve Outing
Foundations, philanthropists, individual donors, and development of non-profit business models that are sustainable without requiring unending foundation checks is achievable for a non-profit news eco-system to supplement the weakened for-profit news media.

Dirk Smillie
Noncommercial news ventures sprouting around the country are feeling some blowback from their for-profit cousins, who don't seem inspired by the new journalism paternalism.
