Full article: Free Press
The FCC announced that it will solicit ideas for new research on barriers to entry for small businesses and underrepresented groups to participate in the communications and media industries. This request is an important step in the media ownership review process.

Statement of Michael J. Copps on 2010 Quadrennial Review

Full article: FCC
In the vast majority of cases, I do not believe that newspaper-broadcast cross-ownership advances the public interest. It means fewer voices in the community, less localism in the industry, and steep transactional costs that all too often lead to down-sized or shuttered newsrooms and fired journalists. Our media, and our public policy, need to head in a different direction.

The FCC Loses Mr. Public Interest, Michael J. Copps

Full article: Seattle Times
The FCC begins the new year without Mr. Public Interest, Michael J. Copps, an outspoken critic of media consolidation. His strong, persistent voice will be missed on a panel evermore inclined to move newspapers, radio, television and broadband toward the smothering embrace of corporate conglomeration.

Erik Sass
The Chicago Sun-Times and a number of other daily and weekly newspapers serving the Chicago area have been acquired by Wrapports. The new company was created by Chicago businessman Michael Ferro and media executive Timothy Knight. The deal is worth over $20 million.

Lots of Newspaper Deals, But Not Much Hope

Erik Sass
The last three months of 2011 brought a sudden flurry of deals in the newspaper industry, with a number of fair-sized metropolitan and regional dailies trading hands. But the increased pace of deal-making doesn’t reflect improved fundamentals for newspaper publishing, which is expected to suffer another round of losses in 2012.
