In Somalia, Islamist Militias Ban Music from the Radio

Full article: Washington Post
Sudarsan Raghavan
Radio stations have become the latest front in an unrelenting war that is a struggle as much for Somalia's identity as its territory. Three weeks ago, a hard-line militia, Hezb-i-Islami, ordered stations in Mogadishu to stop playing music, declaring it un-Islamic. Radio Xurmo complied; the Islamists have killed Somali journalists for less cause.

A Guiding Voice Amid the Ruins of a Capital City

Full article: New York Times
Jeffrey Gettlemen
Radio Mogadishu is the one and only relatively free radio station in south central Somalia where journalists can broadcast what they like. The station's 90-foot antennas have literally become a beacon of freedom for reporters, editors, technicians and disc jockeys all across Somalia who have been chased away from their jobs by radical Islamist insurgents.

John Poirier
A key lawmaker said he has launched an investigation into Arbitron's device to track the public's listening habits because it may under represent some ethnic and age groups. The device has been controversial due to criticisms within the radio industry and state governments that have pointed to some of its flaws.

Frank Fitzpatrick
Harry Kalas, the sincere and sentimental Phillies broadcaster whose smoky voice and singular home run calls were for nearly 40 years as much a franchise fixture as the "P" on its players' red caps, has died at 73. "We lost our voice today," said Phillies president David Montgomery.
