No Cuts to Public Media in the Next Budget

Full article: SavetheNews.org
Josh Stearns
President Obama recently signed next year's funding bill, which provides level funding of $445 million for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for fiscal year 2014 (the CPB budget is determined two years in advance). This is a huge win for the public. But the fight is not over. Snuck into the funding bill is a requirement that the CPB study alternative funding streams, signaling there may be future attacks on its federal support.

Public Broadcasting Initiative Has America (Ferrera) on Its Side

Nick McCarvel
America Ferrera, the star of Ugly Betty, has teamed up with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to announce a $4.4 million grant that will enable CPB to launch an initiative to combat the nation's high school drop-out rate. The initiative, American Graduate, aims to improve the nation's high school graduation rates.

Saving Rural Stations

Full article: SavetheNews.org
Josh Stearns
The vast majority of federal funding provided to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is distributed out to local stations like WMMT that collectively reach roughly 98 percent of the United States. And like WMMT, these stations don't just broadcast national news and Car Talk. At a time when newspapers are cutting back and struggling to stay afloat, and when the 6 o'clock news is filled with more weather reports and commercials than news, public broadcasters are actually investing more in local reporting.

Cassie M. Chew
Funding for Sesame Street, the PBS NewsHour and other public-television programming will remain relatively intact following an intense debate in Congress. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides grants to public television and radio stations across the country, expects to receive a reduction of just under $1 million this fiscal year,

Public Broadcasting Money Mostly Intact in Budget

Full article: Politico
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which distributes funding to broadcasters but does not create content, will receive the vast majority of the appropriations that it requested for 2011. The CPB will endure a slight reduction in funding. “Everybody gets a .2 percent cut,” said Bruce Ramer, CPB board chairman.

NPR Executive Vivian Schiller Resigns Under Pressure from Board and CPB

Full article: Washington Post
Paul Farhi
Vivian Schiller, NPR's top officer, was forced out of her job after two years, just as a Republican-held Congress has accelerated the debate on cutting funds for public broadcasting. Schiller officially resigned, but there was little doubt she was ousted under pressure from NPR's board and officials from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. "The idea was to placate the Hill," said one person involved in the decision. "They needed a human sacrifice." But it's unclear whether Schiller's departure will change any minds in the public broadcasting debate.

John Eggerton
The president preserved funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in the 2012 budget. That is funding Republicans are trying to zero out in their version of funding the government through the rest of this year.

Markey Praises Obama Budget for Protecting Public Broadcasting

Full article: The Hill
Sara Jerome
Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) praised President Obama for presenting a budget proposal that preserves public broadcasting, despite a call by House Republicans to stop government funding to TV and radio stations. Markey said that the President's budget "wisely increases funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which helps to support the production of high quality, informative and educational programming" that is produced locally and reaches virtually every household in the country.

Oscar will have plenty to be grouchy about if bills in Congress become law. Three bills are circulating that would cut or even entirely eliminate federal funding for public broadcasting. And what is it about a 78-year old widow that Fox News commentator Glenn Beck finds so terrifying?
