Gannett Is Offering Buyouts

Full article: MediaBistro
Rachel Kaufman
Gannett is offering buyouts to anyone in its Community Publishing division who is over 56 and has 20 years of service at the company. As a reminder of how huge Gannett is, that applies to 785 people, but Gannett is going to accept 'only" up to 665 employees, split among Gannett's properties.

Gannett Shutters Hyper-Local NJ Sites

Full article: Media Post
Erik Sass
After much talk about the future of news relying more on user-generated contributions, Gannett's early experiments in crowd-sourced local news content has fizzled. It shuttered the company's 17 "hyperlocal" news sites in New Jersey, which operated under the umbrella InJersey.com site. The local news sites were scuttled by layoffs among Gannett staffers, who were still contributing the lion's share of the content.

Revenue Still Down, Gannett Lays Off 700 Employees

Full article: New York Times
Jeremy W. Peters
Gannett has confirmed what many newspaper publishers and employees across the country have feared since the recession officially ended two years ago: that the lagging economic recovery will force more downsizing. Gannett said it would eliminate 700 jobs.

Laid-Off Sports Editor Rips Gannett's Greed

Full article: MediaPost
Erik Sass
The troubles of the newspaper industry have been amply covered over the last few years, and it's no secret that anger, frustration and resentment toward upper management are widespread among newspaper employees. But it's rare that this dissent bubbles up onto the pages of the publications themselves. This week brought a startling attack on Gannett Co. in a farewell column by Frank DiLeo, the longtime sports editor at the Daily Record.

Nat Worden
Gannett's fourth-quarter profit jumped 30 percent as cost cuts and strength from its broadcast division provided a boost; however, revenue at its print publishing businesses continued to stagnate in a worrisome trend for the company.
