Hannah Sassaman
Free Press members fought for years to expand local, accountable, low power community radio to their cities and towns -- and as part of a huge coalition, won that fight in late 2010. Hannah Sassaman, a longtime organizer on media reform and justice issues and a veteran of the Prometheus Radio Project, wrote these thoughts on that victory, and what we need to do next.

National Association of Broadcasters Gives Congress Static

Jennifer Martinez
The National Association of Broadcasters is stubbornly pushing back on a bill that would allow the FCC to distribute more licenses to noncommercial, low-power local radio stations and a bill that would force broadcasters to pay royalties to recording artists when playing their music on the radio. The two bills will have less of an impact on the industry than upcoming battles. So why is it still pinching the nerves of lawmakers on Capitol Hill?

Halimah Marcus
You shouldn't need a phone call from Ira Glass of This American Life for your story to be heard on the air. Low-Power FM radio stations allow the public to take the mic anytime to tell their own stories and share information relevant to their local communities.

Diverse Coalition Calls on U.S. Representatives to Co-sponsor Local Community Radio Act

Full article: Media and Democracy Coalition
A diverse group of organizations called on members of Congress to co-sponsor H.R. 2802, the Local Community Radio Act of 2007. This bi-partisan legislation would authorize the FCC to license hundreds – if not thousands – of new Low Power FM radio stations in cities, towns, and suburbs across the country.
