Prepare to party at NCMR

Yes, the conference is about important work: learning, sharing, strategizing, making connections. But we gotta have some fun while we're at it! The movement that plays together stays together.

Don't miss:

Why I'm Coming to the Nat'l Conf for Media Reform

My name is Garlin Gilchrist II, and just like you, I am deeply
concerned about the future of our media.

That's why I'm attending the 2008 National Conference for Media
Reform in Minneapolis. There are so many issues that the corporate media
won't cover honestly and in depth.

Plugging into the Matrix: Internet Neutrality and the Human Condition

Throw a rock in the air and you’ll hit someone who uses the Internet. Throw the same rock again and you’ll hit someone who has no idea what Internet neutrality is. That’s the thing with people. No one cares how it works as long as it works. But with some issues, caring only when the machine breaks down cannot and will not fix anything. Imagine that you’re living on a space station looking down at the Earth below, and your every breath is provided by machines pumping air into the little tin can you call home. You have instruments that tell you when there’s a problem, but you ignore them because you figure someone else can deal with it. You only start to notice something’s wrong when suddenly you can’t breathe deeply. You can only hold your breath so long. Without the Internet as a neutral playing field people plugging into the matrix will find a much different experience than they have known before.

We started Democracy Now! for a simple reason: to uncover the truth and to tell the stories that most media ignore. One of the most important stories they are missing is the exciting grassroots movement for better media.

The First Advocacy Corporation, or Anti-Corporation type of business

It is my belief that the role of the advocate, the people who believe in things, do things and passionately stand for things, is not structurally protected in this system. The consequences of this is the death of democracy itself and all you need to do is look at the project censored - 25 most censored stories of the year to see this is happening right now. This is a bigger problem than just media consolidation.

Academic Research for Media Reform

The National Conference for Media Reform (NCMR) has become the
meeting place for media reform advocates, activists, media makers,
educators, journalists and other citizens concerned about the state of
American media. In recent years, there has been growing interest in how
academics can tie their research to a reform agenda.

The Academic Symposium for Scholars, co-hosted by Pennsylvania
State University, the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), and Free
Press, will be held the day before the NCMR. The Symposium will be a
forum for presenting new research about reform movement issues and for
promoting dialogue between academics and media
reform proponents. It will be held at a hotel adjacent to the
convention center where the NCMR will be held. Academics and media
reform activists are encouraged to attend and pre-registration for both
events is required.

National Conference for Media Reform

Mark your calendar: the next National Conference for Media Reform will be in Minneapolis on June 6-8, 2008. Once again, thousands of activists,
media makers, educators, journalists, policymakers and concerned
citizens will converge and call for lasting changes
to the media.

As we begin to plan for the 2008 conference, we want to hear your thoughts from the 2007 conference and what you would like to see next year in Minneapolis. Please reply to this post (or create your own blog post) to give us your feedback.
