Wendy Davis
Municipalities in North Carolina that want to build their own broadband networks will find it significantly more difficult to do so, due to a new law backed by cable companies. The controversial House Bill 129 was enacted late last week, after Gov. Bev Perdue declined to either sign or veto it.

Governor Won't Sign Bill, So N.C. Broadband Restrictions Become Law

Jim Barthold
North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue's will neither approve nor veto legislation that effectively outlaws new municipal broadband developments in her state -- or at least makes it very tough for communities to establish their own broadband networks. The governor's inaction means a restrictive bill passed by the legislature becomes law by default.

N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue to Let Bill Restricting Municipal Broadband Become Law

North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue failed to sign or veto a bill restricting further municipal broadband development in the state, asking the legislature to rethink provisions in the bill. By failing to sign the bill, the Gov. Perdue expressed her displeasure, but it will become law just the same without her veto.

Matthew Lasar
North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue has announced that she won't sign or veto the controversial bill on municipal broadband sent to her desk by the state legislature. The legislation reigns in the power of cities and towns to commission their own broadband networks. Perdue's inaction means that House Bill 129 is a done deal.

Joe Schwartz
North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue let House Bill 129, the anti-municipal broadband bill become law, opting to neither sign nor veto the legislation. Her decision is a crushing blow for Internet access advocates, who have fought bills for four years arguing that broadband must be viewed as a valuable public utility that the government should provide as it does for water, sewer and mail.

North Carolina Gov.
Perdue Will Not Veto Muni Broadband Bill

Full article: Greensboro News & Record
Mark Binker
Technology advocates have been urging Gov. Bev Perdue to veto H 129, a bill that would limit cities' and counties' ability to develop their own municipal broadband and cable systems. The governor said she won't veto the bill, but she won't sign it either. While symbolically that means she doesn't like the bill, practically it means the measure will go into law without her signature.

Rob Christensen
North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue criticized a bill that restricts municipalities from building and operating broadband Internet systems, but said she would not use her veto power to block it. Instead, she urged the legislature to reconsider the issue, which had been pushed through by the cable and telephone lobby.

Alex Pareene
The Republicans who control state legislatures across the nation aren't just sending immigrants to private prisons and forbidding children from learning of the existence of gay people -- they are also working closely with major telecom lobbyists to hobble municipal broadband services. North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue is now deciding whether to sign or veto a bill severely restricting local communities from creating broadband networks.
