What to Make of AT&T's Vanishing Spectrum Crisis

Full article: GigaOM
Tim Farrar
Is AT&T failing to keep its story straight about the need for more spectrum, or is it just that the popping of the spectrum bubble has taken them by surprise as well? Recently the nation’s second largest operator has seemed to back off from some of its more aggressive claims about how fast data traffic was growing.

AT&T Says Throttling Policy Isn't as Bad as You Think

Full article: New York Times
Brian X. Chen
Last year, AT&T warned smartphone customers with unlimited data plans that it may temporarily reduce their Internet connection speeds if they were in the "top 5 percent" of heaviest data users. Only recently have some customers begun receiving notifications about their data connections being slowed down, and AT&T claims that it isn't as bad as it seems.

Since the FCC No Longer Listens, AT&T Tries Congress

Full article: GigaOM
Stacey Higginbotham
In recent weeks AT&T has gone into overdrive defending its efforts to stop the FCC from setting any rules that might limit AT&T's attempts to bid for the hoped-for spectrum. AT&T's machinations are puzzling, since it has managed to pick up a considerable amount of spectrum under the rules that the FCC has set in previous years for auctions. And it actually seems like AT&T wouldn’t want a completely neutered FCC overseeing the wireless industry, especially given the amount of partisan bickering that can hold up its favored legislation in Congress.

Can't We All Get Along?

Full article: National Journal
Juliana Gruenwald
If you thought the sparring between AT&T and Sprint ended with the demise late last year of AT&T's bid to buy T-Mobile, think again. AT&T is once again on the opposite side of a major telecom issue with Sprint, a fierce critic of the AT&T/T-Mobile merger, and several other smaller rivals. The issue this time is over legislation aimed at freeing up more spectrum to meet the public's growing demand for wireless technologies.

If 2 GB Is Excessive, Why Is AT&T Selling 3-GB Mobile Data Plans?

Full article: GigaOM
Kevin Fitchard
When AT&T first implemented its throttling policies on unlimited mobile data plans last fall, it justified the move by claiming it had to limit the "extraordinary" consumption of a few greedy smartphone customers. We're starting now to get a glimpse of what AT&T means by extraordinary. It's only 2 GB -- a full gigabyte less than it sells its newest customers under its most-common data plan.

AT&T & Dish Fight over Spectrum, but Will Either Build a Network?

Kevin Fitchard
Report after report points to AT&T marrying Dish Network after Ma Bell’s forced breakup with T-Mobile, but given the companies’ increasing belligerence, you wouldn’t think that was the case. Instead of using public airwaves to deploy real networks, operators seem to be playing high-stakes poker with their licenses.

AT&T Starts Throttling Unlimited Data Users after 2GB of Monthly Usage

Full article: MacRumors
Arnold Kim
When AT&T announced its plan to start throttling users who are grandfathered into its unlimited data plan, the company said that it would be throttling only the top 5 percent of users. Early reports of affected users had pointed to 10GB-12GB-per-month users as the initially affected. It seems that ceiling has decreased significantly over the past few months, at least for some regions.
